[ QUOTE ]
The other day the topic of running comes up, and he eventually bets me that I could not run 5 miles without stopping in 45 minutes (on a regular track)... ...We havn't shook on anything yet, so nothing is set in stone. [/ QUOTE ] We haven't shook on anything? What does that mean? I know what it meant when we were children. It meant, "I'm gonna welsh, because my integrity as a man means absolutely nothing to me." What does it mean when an adult says it? I've never seen that happen before. |

And regarding my friend, I thought that was really wierd too. He played NCSL or whatever and was pretty good. I think it wouldn't have been as hard for him as he thinks. But he injured his pelvis a few years ago and hasn't been able to play. I have my friend up to 48 minutes. Hopefully I will get 50. I really think I can do it in 50. If it comes down to the final mile, I know I could just sprint the last lap on pure adrenaline. I'm willing to run through the pain since it's just this one time. It will def be interesting though. |

Doing this on a track is so awful psychologically. I like feeling like I'm going somewhere when I'm running. My distance times were always slower on tracks than on equal-distance, relatively flat outdoor courses.
I ran 5 miles in 8th grade (middle of track and soccer seasons) in a little uender 31 minutes. That is the last time I ran it timed, but there is no doubt I could have replicated this or beaten it my senior year during soccer season. However, just a little more than 2 years removed from this, I would not be close. I am not out of shape by any means, but there is a huge difference between working out a few times per week and running around practicing for 2 hours every single day. 35 would be absolutely out of the question and 48 is questionable since I haven't ran for anything longer than about 30 minutes at a leisurely pace in a long time. That said, I think there is no way you do this in 35. If you have been removed from serious training for 4 years and done nothing more than casual fitness, I doubt you will make 45-48 either. If this is for significant money, I would at least ask for some training. Edit: Also, a best time of 20:xx for an XC runner is by no means good. You were probably really spent after you did this, and this was when you were in the best shape of your life. I would try to get an hour out of him. |

I know 20 somethin is not good for a 5k, but I wasn't absolutely terrible. That's all I was saying.

this is tough ... mostly because your mile times will slow down exponentially, especially if you are out of shape. I imagine that even if you were able to run a 25 min 3 mile today, you may not be able to run a 45 min 5 mile.
As others have pointed out, running on a track is even worse ... unless you are allowed to run with music. If thats the case, you will want to find a song or songs that have a relatively good pace that you can run with. Im sure there is a list of songs somewhere online. |

[/ QUOTE ] tracks are indeed more boring to run on, but they make for faster time trials b/c its flat and the surface is better. in my days of competitive running i never ran faster off the track than on it. a comparison outdoor 5k times to 5k times on tracks suggests the same. |

If it were to happen this Saturday, you have no chance whatsoever.
If you're incredibly out of shape, the amount of time (since you can't stop to walk) added won't matter. I played soccer in HS, my best mile time in HS was 6:04. I stayed in shape during college and ran a 5:15 mile at the gym once. I've been working out on and off for the past 8 years. I'm not in great shape, but I'd definitely say I'm far better than average. 6'0 210lbs. Been working out rigorously over the past month to get back in shape. 10lbs lost. Yes, still about 10lbs overweight. Can bench 235 for 6 reps. Curling 45lbs for 6-7 reps max, yada yada yada. I CANT RUN A MILE IN UNDER 6:30 RIGHT NOW. I **might** and I use this term liberally, be able to finish 2 miles, period. There is no way in hell you could do 5 miles if you're out of shape. Can't be done, back out now (you tubby bastard). . . |

I run 1.5 miles about 4 times a week and it takes 15 minutes. I'd say I'd be an even-money shot to do five miles at a nine minute pace per mile though, so I really, really doubt you can do this. I agree with most people that you'll have no chance.
How much is the bet for, though? |

[/ QUOTE ] I think the strategy is you need to eat some carbs the day before (pasta) and then eat greens/salad like a couple hours before you go. The carbs are for stored energy. You want something light the day of, though. This is what I remember, but might be off slightly. EDIT: And obviously make sure you're fully hydrated and bring water. |
