[ QUOTE ]
However, when I hear people talk of the obligation to tip it seriously wants me to not tip at all. If more people didnt tip, then maybe they would stop "expecting" it and work a little harder. rJ_ [/ QUOTE ] ...good thing they would still be there to wait on you if you didn't tip, since they come to work for fun and all. -oh wait, I forgot about their wage (which is $2.13 an hour in Texas.) |

I think restaurants should just pay servers like $15-20 hour and then raise there prices. That way you cheap people won't have to complain about tipping.

Even as someone who works as a server through grad school, I don't think it should be an obligation to tip the usual amount on the wine in this situation, provided it was just from the bottle. In no way do I feel entitled to and extra $40 dollars each time I open a bottle of Opus one for someone. Now if you managed to rack up that high a liquor tab on just drinks by the glass, then I think the mandatory grat is reasonable.

If you don't want to tip on wine, either go to a BYOB or don't order wine. [/ QUOTE ] Way to overdraw your inference. So, 8 people, 1K bill, $700 in wine. What do you tip? |

[/ QUOTE ] So 8 ppl = $300 in food. That's about $37 or so per person. How many bottles of wine in that $700? - and how good was the service, of course? |

[ QUOTE ]
Automatic gratuities are simply necessary to avoid situations where a waiter gets shafted. It's one thing to get stiffed on a party of 2, but when a big party takes up a waiter's section all night and leaves him like $5 or something, it's just not right. [/ QUOTE ] I totally understand and agree. But, obviously the waiter did in fact work substantially less to get two bottles of wine than he did for serving eight people. |
