pc, The funniest fight of the night was against the 51 year old grey headed dude. WTF!? Gracie had his back and was choking him, I said, "hurry man! tap before you have a [censored]' heart attack!" [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that dude was a fossil. The opening announcemnts said that he had black belts in 9 or 10 MA styles though. I remember in another of the fights, Gracie had his opponent in an armbar, and the dude was tapping for like 10-15 seconds before the ref noticed. It was also interesting to see the young John McCarthy. |

[ QUOTE ] You have to be able to strike these days and Royce was never any kind of striker. He was dominant back in the old days when nobody else knew BJJ but now he has no edge. [/ QUOTE ] The reason he was dominating in the early days was because his cousin organized the UFC and didn't invite any top fighters to come participate. The whole tournament was set up for him to win. [/ QUOTE ] There is WAY WAY more to this than people credit. The rise of BJJ as the definitive martial art form was a brilliant maneuver on the part of the Gracies. That they could be considered to have chosen the toughest opponents out there is pretty funny, but it's what passes for truth these days. |

gus, [ QUOTE ] Severn's GnP offense sucked. He hardly hurt Royce at all. [/ QUOTE ] Not many did right? I am asking b/c I think you will know more about it than I. Didn't his first 8 UFC fights last a total of 11 minutes? Then he fought Kimo which banged him up some, what about after the Kimo fight, was it as smooth or did he get roughed up? I ask b/c his style didn't really allow for him to take a lot of punishment, but if he did it would seem that he could get hurt. interested, ~td [/ QUOTE ] Royce Gracie's fight history I think some of the above times are wrong. Particularly Art Jimmerson. I seriously doubt that fight lasted more than a minute. Jimmerson tapped within 5 seconds of being taken down. But if those times are right, his first 7 fights (before Kimo) lasted 13:55. But the UFC flat out lied about the lengths of his fights. During his Kimo fight, they said it had surpassed the Ichihara fight as Royce's longest fight. Flat out false. The Ichihara fight was over 5 minutes long. As for anyone hurting Royce, probably only Kimo and maybe Keith Hackney (who might have landed a couple of glancing blows). I don't think Severn hurt him at all. Shamrock did catch Royce pretty good in their second fight, though. Kimo hurt Royce pretty bad, forcing Royce to leave the tourney in UFC 3. But Royce can take more punishment than you'd think: Even though Kimo caught him a few times, Royce never stopped pressing. |

Historically, these sorts of matches end with the old draw getting completely dominated by the current champion. I would venture to say that Gracie's strategy is to not get beat too badly and hope for a rematch check. To this end, he will probably survive the rounds (though clearly loosing) or looses via cut/referee stoppage. |

[/ QUOTE ] Royce had a mean streak that hardly anyone talks about. In UFC 1, he choked Shamrock. Shamrock tapped and Royce let go. The ref (not Big John) didn't see the tap. Royce never made that mistake (letting go before the ref tells him) again. The last fight of UFC 1, he choked out the guy and kept the choke on because it took a while for the ref to see him. UFC 2, the fight you're thiking of is Jason DeLucia. Jason tried to stand up, but Royce got the arm bar on, hanging from Jason while Jason was tapping. The ref didn't see, so Royce kept it on. UFC 2, the real mean one. Royce mount Pat Smith and was punching him in the face. Pat tried to tap. Royce grabbed Pat's tapping arm and kept punching him! And, for an earlier example of the mean streak, he had another fight with Jason DeLucia. He easily could have choked him out, but didn't. Twice. Preferring instead to punch Jason. You can see that fight here. |

gus,
I'm quite interested in learning about UFC/Pride fighting, from a spectator's point of view, but I'm having a hard time finding any sort of intelligent discussion on the subject. Sherdog seems to have a bunch of fanbois who love to fight over which organization is better; is there a better board out there? yasher |

gus,
I saw when he wouldn't let go of DeLucia after he had tapped with his right hand then his left hand then both hands, that HAD to be scary. That video was amazing. Wow. He really is like a frickin' constrictive snake. Thanks for the link. ~td |

Sherdog has some good discussion about MMA, but you have to weed through a lot of worthless posts to get to them. Unfortunately, I don't know of any other good boards. |

Back when UFC first started, rumor had it the Gracies used Royce because he was the weakest/least skilled of all the Gracie brothers. It was their way of trying to show how powerful BJJ was. Whether it was marketing or not it certainly worked.

We've also got a couple very knowledgable MMA people in the Sports Betting forum (including a still active thread on UFC 59). |
