UFC Unleashed yesterday - Royce Gracie (Gracie vs Hughes coming soon)

I have never seen this man fight before yesterday. I think they were showing all Royce Gracie fights, but I only saw the last half hour of the show.

I had no idea his name was pronouced "Hoice".

It was awesome to see the master at work. They played the Kimo fight from 1995 I think. Kimo outweighed him by 75lbs and Gracie still tore him up as soon as they got to the ground. Needless to say I was very impressed.

The next UFC pay-per-view is Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie. This may be the first time I pay for a UFC event.

Isn't he like 50 by now?

From what I've read, Gracie doesn't stand much of a chance against Hughes. He's only had a couple of professional fights in the past few years and supposedly didn't look very good in either of them. I think he won them both by decision and not very decisively.

It will definitely be interesting to see what happens. After Matt just destroyed Joe Riggs, who couldn't even make weight and was at least 20-30lbs heavier, I think he will manhandle Gracie and G&P him pretty hard.

You have to be able to strike these days and Royce was never any kind of striker. He was dominant back in the old days when nobody else knew BJJ but now he has no edge.

Why is he still fighting? Are the Gracies broke already?

In one of the fights last night, I think they said he was 27yo and it was in 1994 which would make him about 39. I could be wrong.

Yeah, I dont know how well the "get mauled for the entire fight and score an armlock submission at the last second" game plan is gonna work in today's UFC. Are they gonna let Royce wear his, uh, ninja robes or whatever?

The reason he was dominating in the early days was because his cousin organized the UFC and didn't invite any top fighters to come participate. The whole tournament was set up for him to win.

pretty sure he missed wieght by 1 or 2 pounds. but i do agree with the general sentiment that he will get crushed.

applejuicekid,

That too. I remember a particularly embarassing Royce fight against a boxer who actually wore a boxing glove on one hand and tapped out in the guard. But he did beat Dan Severn, even though he was gettting his ass kicked the whole fight.
