[ QUOTE ] This is total Nirvana snobbishness but Nevermind was like their third best studio album. But I suppose in some sense it was pretty important. [/ QUOTE ] It wasn't important at all. I'm sick of this sentiment. It was, however, a really good album. [/ QUOTE ] what? ive never seen anyone try and claim this. nevermind completely changed popular music. w/in a very short time period, the hair bands like poison were completely out of fashion and grunge was king. it was an exciting time on the music scene. there were countless bands that got their break because of nirvana. |

As a couple of other people have noted, they have a Creed album ahead of London Calling. Whoever made this list should be clubbed like a harp seal. Two times. Quick.

Do you guys think there are even 200 "definitive" (whatever the f*ck that really means) albums out there? If so, do you think you could present in such a way that it would be reasonably agreeable to most music fans?

For this list to have any relevance, there would need to be 200 separate genres and/or distinct sub-genres, and Minor Threat would need to appear (definitive straight edge), the Misfits would need to appear (definitive New Jersey goth-punk), and Crass would need to appear (definitive anarcho-leftist rant collective). The whole thing's just goofy |

I'll try to mention the positives about the list. The first few selections are either classics or sold very well or both. The first really bad selection is probably Shania Twain at #21 (or maybe Santana at #13). The albums in front of it, you may argue whether the album is the best work by the artist, but they are considered classic artists.
After that, it's still not that bad for the top 50 or so. One may argue that Eminem, Norah Jones, and Outkast are old enough to be considered "essential", but their selections aren't really out there. They really do start reaching by the time they reach 55 and below, though (Lauryn Hill's album, while successful, has not aged well and is not considered a classic by most rap fans). I would agree that Soundtracks don't belong on this kind of list. The possible exception is Saturday Night Fever, only because it's an important document of the peak of the disco craze. But Titanic, Dirty Dancing, and Top Gun? What are they thinking? |
