[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] It will definitely be interesting to see what happens. After Matt just destroyed Joe Riggs, who couldn't even make weight and was at least 20-30lbs heavier, I think he will manhandle Gracie and G&P him pretty hard. [/ QUOTE ] pretty sure he missed wieght by 1 or 2 pounds. but i do agree with the general sentiment that he will get crushed. [/ QUOTE ] Correct, although at fight time I would bet that Riggs was at least 20lbs heavier. His frame is just naturally much bigger than Matt and he's taller too. They said he was walking around at well over 200 before the weigh-in also. |

[ QUOTE ] Isn't he like 50 by now? [/ QUOTE ] In one of the fights last night, I think they said he was 27yo and it was in 1994 which would make him about 39. I could be wrong. [/ QUOTE ] Royce is 39 (12/12/1966). Hughes is 32 (10/13/73) As to those questioning his motiviation, Gracie is reportedly getting a record 1.25M for the fight appearance. |

amplify,
Yeah, that was funny. The Dan Severn fight was pretty cool, but he's not an elite fighter either. They built up this legend by having him fight people who had no idea what they were doing (besides Shamrock). However, when I saw UFC 1 + 2 for the first time I thought it was awesome. It did wonders for the reputation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when in reality a world class kick boxer or wrestler would have probably won the tournament just as easily. |

[ QUOTE ]
From what I've read, Gracie doesn't stand much of a chance against Hughes. He's only had a couple of professional fights in the past few years and supposedly didn't look very good in either of them. I think he won them both by decision and not very decisively. [/ QUOTE ] Today's fighters are more knowledgable about Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu (they have to be, or they'll get submitted very quickly). Hughes has a good wrestling background and should be able to avoid getting taken down. Even if he does, he's got much better defenses than those guys did back in the early UFC. |

[ QUOTE ]
The reason he was dominating in the early days was because his cousin organized the UFC and didn't invite any top fighters to come participate. The whole tournament was set up for him to win. [/ QUOTE ] It wasn't his cousin. It was his older brother Rorion. But everything else you said was right. They were apparently going to use Rickson Gracie instead, but he was already a star (in Brazil, at least), and wanted to build up another family member instead. As for the fight, no way in hell that Gracie will take down Hughes. Hughes is going to take him down and be in Royce's guard the whole fight. Will probably be pretty boring. |

pc,
The funniest fight of the night was against the 51 year old grey headed dude. WTF!? Gracie had his back and was choking him, I said, "hurry man! tap before you have a [censored]' heart attack!" |

[/ QUOTE ] I know a family member had a share in UFC but Im pretty sure the other people set up the fights. Im curious where you heard this. |

[ QUOTE ]
applejuicekid, That too. I remember a particularly embarassing Royce fight against a boxer who actually wore a boxing glove on one hand and tapped out in the guard. [/ QUOTE ] Most boring fight ever. Art Jimmerson was his name. As soon as Royce took him down, he tapped. Royce didn't even attempt to do anything on the ground. Of course, that was smart on his part, he knew he was going to lose if the match got on the ground, so he tapped. [ QUOTE ] But he did beat Dan Severn, even though he was gettting his ass kicked the whole fight. [/ QUOTE ] Severn's GnP offense sucked. He hardly hurt Royce at all. |

gus,
[ QUOTE ] Severn's GnP offense sucked. He hardly hurt Royce at all. [/ QUOTE ] Not many did right? I am asking b/c I think you will know more about it than I. Didn't his first 8 UFC fights last a total of 11 minutes? Then he fought Kimo which banged him up some, what about after the Kimo fight, was it as smooth or did he get roughed up? I ask b/c his style didn't really allow for him to take a lot of punishment, but if he did it would seem that he could get hurt. interested, ~td |
