I know this isn't what you asked, but you should seriously consider getting a PS2, an eye-toy, and a dance-mat and game for the PS2. The kids absolutely love these. [/ QUOTE ] I have been avoiding this as I do not want her playing too many video games - I fear having a system like that will cause her to spend too much time in front of the TV (as opposed to doing more active things) - I see her every 2 months (in Sweden) and we play on my computer at night before she goes to bed, she really does not play video games when I am not there (she is after all an 8 year old girl) |

I never thought they would - af [/ QUOTE ] There is some website that for like $15 a month or something you get access to all those old games (downloaded straght from the intenet) cant remember it tho. You can also google "emulator" and find them for free (tho illegally) |

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown My roommate got the demo for this game as sortof a joke sometime last week, but the game is actually pretty good. It's simple, fun, for kids, obviously, and also happens to be rather pretty. I think it's exactly what you're looking for. [/ QUOTE ] That looks pretty good - thanks |

Action/adventure games for the PC have been very mature for some time. Honestly I'm having trouble thinking of anything in that genre that isn't.
Most of the nonviolent action/adventure sorts of games are produced for the consoles these days. However, there are a few good PC games, some real classics, that may be worthwhile. The Myst games have some merit. Personally I loved the old King's Quest games when I was young. Puzzle games and strategy games are often appropriate, Lemmings maybe. The Sims, Civilization, Pirates!, etc. Some RPGs, Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate or maybE Knights of the Old Republic. Starcraft and Warcraft. The Monkey Island games. Prince of Persia. Grim Fandango. Age of Empires, Heroes of Might and Magic. I can't think of anything that quite meets your criteria. Honestly if she's into action/adventure you might get her a console. Some of them are going relatively cheap now. No recent action game for the PC that I can think of is remotely appropriate for an 8-year-old girl. |

CIV 4 lol, did you miss where he said she's eight?
You might want to go for a game based on an animated movie, as was suggested above. Or one of the 2D Worms games, though they are a bit old now. Maybe one of the Monkey Island games, though the humour would go over her head and you'd probably have to play it with her to solve the puzzles. |

She's 8, and if she plays PC games she's probably well ahead of the curve. She doesn't need watered down [censored]. A smart 8-year-old can definitely learn Civ4.

Well, it's rather dry. There's a fair amount of reading, not "too" much, and a lot of math. But I think the biggest barrier would be that it's very dry, all about systems and managing systems.

Maybe a little young for that - she likes games where you have to jump and fight (but I do not want her to be playing games with lifelike violence - cartoon characters fighting is OK - blood, not so much)
