Checking in a vacuum is probably better because you could win a showdown with AK-high UI and he calls/raises your c-bet with alot of his range.

However poker is not played hand-by-hand vacuum style and so I usually bet here to balance the times I have an overpair and want action.

When I do check in spots like these, I find that villain fires at the turn a very large % of the time, and I fold unimproved. I then get really angry at myself for checking in the first place.
