Yeah pretty much all of that is worthless to current players. You won't be able to move most of it.

I was kind of hoping there were still people out there that collect these things just for the sake of collecting them. In other words, they aren't entirely concerned with the actual strength of the cards in a modern game. I think some of these cards are even banned in tournaments and such so they actually are worthless in that respect.

Pure collectors are sort of rare and only want mint cards. Might ask at www.magictraders.com . Be careful if you actually trade there. Lot's of scammers.

I'll list the cards you can unload; I disagree that they're all worthless to current players, but most are.

4th Mana Vault(T1 players need these, but they're easy to find, low value)
Revised/Unlimited Demonic Tutor(same as above)
Ice Age Underground River(Extended players might use these)
Ice Age Karplusan Forest(same as above)
Ice Age Sulfurous Springs(less than the other painlands)
4th Mana Flare(newb value)
4th Shivan Dragon(newb value)

Honestly, all the other uncommons/rares you wont be able to get [censored] for, and those prices are very generous. I imagine that's what the store is selling them for, not what they're buying them at; expect a huge difference.

If you want cash, find a local store that buys singles and take them in as bulk; sometimes you find store owners who are dumb enough to buy everything at magazine prices, but I wouldnt hold your breath.

This was my initial plan and the main reason I wanted to know what I should expect to get for the entire set. I didn't want to get ripped off by some store owner and get a lot less than I should be getting.

I also noticed that both you and illeagle are determining the value of the cards based on their effectiveness in tournaments. Does this mean the alpha and beta cards that previously had a lot of value are now worth the same as their 4th/5th edition counterparts?

Well, to be honest, any cash you can get for any of those cards aside from the ones I listed is a good deal. As someone who played Type 1 competitively, I would laugh at you if you offered me the set(sans the ones I pointed out) for $5. None of those cards are really even useful in casual play.

With regards to your question about the value of alpha and beta editions, they are still worth much more than their unlimited and revised counterparts. I prefer black borders on my cards and when I was actively playing, I'd constantly be on the lookout to upgrade to an older version. A lot of players are like this; I went to great lengths to swap all my Revised dual lands for Unlimited editions because that's my preference. Any of the cards that are worth a decent amount of money now(re: the power 9) werent printed in revised, and a ton of cards like dual lands were taken out of 4th. I haven really looked at the market in a year or so as I dont have time to play these days, but I think alpha/beta's will always hold more value than Unlimited editions, and Unl more than Revised, etc.

I played this game years ago, I will have to get out some of my cards, I have alot of the original 2 series of cards(Black Boarder). I could not even tell you how to start a game now.

Back then that the "Black Lotus" was one of the best cards. I know I have a few of them, but I could not even tell you what they did anymore.

I have thousands of them boxed up in 2 large rubbermaid tubs. I think they are in the garage somewhere where they have been for the past 8+ years. I have a playing deck but I also have cards that I collected and never played. If they are worth more in cash then the time it takes to price them, I will sell mine too.

If you have several black lotuses, it's likely worth your time. You'll fetch $100's for each beta Black Lotus.
