(The point of this remark is that of course putting morals and ethics aside a lot of awful actions can be justified. Such a question is ridiculous -- you are saying if we put aside morals and ethics, is murdering innocents to pad our wallets really a bad idea?)

Throughout history many wars have been enacted almost entirely for gain, morals and ethics aside. What makes you think that couldn't happen today, and with the USA? Tweak conditions a bit and I'll bet it could happen, though when nations wage war usually some excuse goes along with it.
