I don't think there is, for a naturally carnivorous species. If we were all able to afford or readily find whatever cruelty free food is, it would be one thing, or if we were all growing our own food so we could make choices. But I can't recall ever seeing "cruelty free" meat in a grocery store and I bet most Americans haven't either. It's not a realistic option at this point, for most of us.

When it becomes a realistic option, then we can talk about it. And that will have to include economics, too. So there might never be a discussion.

Is Vick gonna get raped in prison? Is he going to rape anyone? What happens to someone of his status when they go to prison for a while?

I was just discussing this with a friend. The conclusion is that he will be untouchable in prison because a) he is loaded and knows lots of bad mofos so he can pay for protection; b) he didn't bitch out and snitch like his friends did; and c) he's no Mike Tyson so you don't get badass points for kicking his ass.

I love dogs, I'm not really a fan of dogfighting, but I think some people are taking their hatred of this stuff way too far. Certain dogs are bred to have certain characteristics. Retrievers love to retrieve, collies love to herd, many terriers love to hunt vermin, and pitbulls love to fight. From what I've read on it most dogfights are not to death, rather they end when one dog refuses to continue in the fight. Sometimes deaths or serious injuries may occur, but the same can be said of human sport fighting. I have much more of a problem with the training and out of ring treatment of fighting dogs than I do with dogfighting itself.

Er, in human sport fighting, eye gouging is forbidden and nobody has sharp implements with which to tear out each other's throats and rip each other's bellies open or tear each other's balls off.

I love dogs, but they're just dogs. I think the outrage is because dogs are companion animals and they're cute. If this was a cockfighting enterprise, etc., I don't think the outcry would have been near as great and Vick wouldn't be going to jail. A big fine, maybe.

I couldn't disagree with you any more. The fact that he may never play in the NFL ever again is well worth the price for his crime. I'll never watch another NFL game if he's allowed to play again in the NFL.
