We're less than 50 years removed from a time when very real, very painful very evil racism and discrimination was pervasive in this country. Frankly, I think it's a little soon to be laughing off these little coy moments of offensiveness as if we don't still face these types of issues. If posts and discussion like this serve to keep people aware, that's a fantastic thing.

I agree with Dids. the fact that this little moment did not cause pain or suffering does not make it ok. it's not a heinous crime, but it may be evidence of a larger problem. hard to say without knowing the people.

There is a difference. Ignorance is often a cause of racism, but they're not the same. I'm ignorant of many races but I have enough tact and self-awareness to be careful in new cultures/environments so that I don't come off as offensive.

Well, certainly its possible to be ignorant without being racist, so the equality fails on face value, and leaves us with only the possibility that racism is a subset of ignorance.

While racism does, in many cases, stem from ignorance, Im not sure it ALWAYS does.

this happened to a friend. he was in a convenience store and the counter girl says to him

while she said this, she actually made grabbed teh corner of her eyes with her fingers and made chinky eyes.
