I was at Foxwoods 2/5 game with about $275 in front. I was down 2 buy-ins and this was what remained of my 3rd and final buy-in. Previously, I had flopped 3 sets and lost all 3 hands. I was second best all night when his happened.
I was in the SB with AJos, no diamonds. Raised to $15, I am the only caller. Flop comes AJ7 2 diamonds. I had flopped 2 pair. Regardless of the betting, the turn brings 3 diamonds on the board. Villian bets, I raise ALL IN (at this point about 1.75 psb), villain tanks FOREVER and then says, "Alright I call, Come On Diamond, Come on Diamond!!!" I think yes, flush drawing!! Neither of us show our cards at this point. River is a total blank. Villian says immediately and loudly "I have a flush". Digusted, I throw my 2 pair into the muck and walk away from the table. Afterwards, I wondered if he really had a flush or was just saying that to get the exact reaction I gave him. Why would he be rooting for the diamond if he already had a flush? I already know that I made the mistake of mucking my hand pre-mature and it will not happen again. I wonder at Foxwoods is it against the rules to misrepresent your hand like that? Or was I played into throwing the best hand away. I will never know but what do you think? |

turn your hand face up in front of you and see what he has

I think you should always make him show you a hand. To protect against angle shooters, get details for the bbs, and accomodate Foxwoods players who honestly can't read the board.

Of course you should never throw in your cards before your opponent shows regardless of what he says. I have heard people clearly say "Flush" when it is their turn to show and then when I make them turn their cards over they have a pair. They then say "I was thinking you had a flush"...
If it will make you feel better, he likely did have a flush in order to call your all-in and wanted a diamond because it would be less likely to pair the board. I have no idea what the rule is at Foxwoods about miscalling your hand but it would be hard to prove with certainty so the guy would probably just get a warning if the Floor was called. But the Floor only gets called in these situations if the guy has to turn his cards over and somebody discarded their hand into the muck and its still retrievable. |

You were angle shot. I had the some guy (same one maybe?) try to pull this on me a couple of months ago at the 2/5 game at FW. The guy was on my right and kept pushing all-in on the river over me. I'd fold because I'd wasn't willing to donk off $700-800 with TPTK or 2pr on a draw heavy board. Finally I had flopped a set and got him to get all his money in on the turn before any draws got there. The river brings a third flush card, and we hadn't turned our hands up yet and he goes "I've got the flush". I almost mucked, but then I flipped my hand up and showed my set and said "I really don't think you have a flush." and he mucked and left.

If this is the typical gambooler type, calling for a card means he is already beating that hand. "OK, I'll bet my two pair" means trips or better and calling for a diamond means he already had the best possible flush...

Trust me, that is all I can think about is how big of a moron I am for not checking the cards. |
