Default Consulting jobs and other quantitative type jobs

Hi all,

I'm looking to make a career change soon, and am having difficulty deciding what path to take. Here's my background: electrical engineering degree, but have been working mostly doing internet marketing type stuff (search marketing, ppc, php/mysql, etc).

I actually love my current work, but am finding that with these small internet companies it's very difficult to move up in the companies unless you own it yourself.

So, I'm looking for some advice:

(1) If you do internet marketing/ecommerce, I'd like to hear about career paths that give some promotability

---------------------------------

(2) I'm interested in hearing from people in business or management consulting type jobs who like their work. Specific questions for those:

a. Which companies/industries in particular require little/no travel? I can deal with a few weeks of travel per year, but not too much more.

b. Are particular industries better to work in than others for promotability? Getting a secret/TS clearance would be nice to have

c. Are any companies particularly strong in ecommerce/dot com/techie type industries?

d. any other input you have about consulting career paths, where to go after, how compensation is, etc. I'm a little worried about taking a pay cut if I have to come in at entry level.

I'm in the DC metro area, so I'd prefer stuff around here, but am open to other big metro areas (chicago, etc)

----------------------------------

(3) Outside of consulting, I'd like to hear about other jobs that would be good for someone w/ quantitative skills. Requirements are solid pay and promotability.

Thanks so much

-Z

Cliff notes: seeking any relevant information on consulting or techie related jobs.

I am a Management Consultant and a principal in our firm. I will answer your #2 a little later tonight. Currently at a client assignment. Unless you are going to be a 1 man shop and work only in one sector......get your travelling shoes.
