I have been commissioned to buy some swim shorts for a 40 year old guy. I have no idea what is in style and what looks "dated". I never go to the beach and very rarely go to the pool. Please give me some feedback on these styles. Thanks.

I would wear #4 and #6 without any problem. I would actually prefer #4 since it has pockets and I am more about function than fashion anyway and the pockets give me a place to put things.

Definitely don't do 3. Sure, that's what most 40 year old guys wear, but they're pretty ugly. I agree that number 2 require darker skin. Not necessarily black, but he should at least have a good tan if he wears those. Numbers 1, 5, and 6 are all essentially the same style, and are my preferred style of swimwear. Pick something like them in a color scheme that the guy you're shopping for likes.

The only one I halfway like is the first, but boy is that a dull color.

I'm old school, but I think old school rules here. Long shorts like these all are take much longer to dry out than shorter ones do. I'd wear these shorts for walking around at the beach, but would find them uncomfortable after I got out of the water. I don't want to carry the water with me all day.

I think this really depends on the material. My board shorts stay wet for a half hour max in the sun.
