You guys know that in countries outside North America that your not even supposed to tip, and that it is frowned upon. Unless you hand it directly to the waiter/host/etc but it is not expected.

Usally though 7-8$ fare I just hand the guy a 10 and its fine.

I've never really had any jackass taxi guys or w/e yet but im in Canada so..

All,

A lot of people REALLY appreciate getting tipped a few bucks extra and it feels good when you make people really happy like that.

shaniac you're wrong here, the standard is for the waiter to say "i'll be right back with some change"

[/ QUOTE ]

Not in high end restaurants, its generally "I'll be right back with a pen.

[/ QUOTE ]

What exactly is the pen used for when paying in cash?

Almost every dealer prefers tips as bets - chance for double the tip!

[/ QUOTE ]

god they're so dumb.

[/ QUOTE ]

Lol it's true though, almost every dealer will tell you they prefer the action.

[/ QUOTE ]
IME (somewhat limited) people tip MORE when they are giving the tips as bets, and therefore the dealers are NOT dumb for prefering this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Many times, I have had a $5 chip and said, "You want the tip now or should I gamble it for you next hand" and they usually accept the latter offer.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, when I'm playing teh craps and I tip by placing it on the pass line, or whatever, I'm more likely to tip sooner if the tip didn't get to them. Also, I've heard that some casinos tell their dealers to request tips be bets. This creates more of a bond btwn dealer and customer as both want a winner now. This bond makes the player like the dealer and, by extension, the casino. Meh?

shane,

"the dude who opens the cab door"

I tip that guy whenever he's actively managing a line and waving cabs over. When there's no line in the middle of the day and I just walk up to a cab and he then strolls over to get the door I don't always tip. I dunno, this service is just so useless to me and frankly a little annoying at times.

A few weeks ago w/ beetz, he goes to hand the guy a dollar but all he has is hundreds. He turns to me and asks if I have any small bills. Cab door guy says "hey guys, don't sweat it no big deal if you don't get us every time, I appreciate the thought." I gave the dude $5 for his attitude.

fare was like $10.20 at the most ... I hand the guy $12. He's like "c'mon man you only gave me $11" I say "no way I gave you 12" I grab the money and re-count since he's still holding it up by his head. I count it up and its 12 (2x5 + 2x1) .. take back a dollar bill. "now its 11" and leave.

[/ QUOTE ]
A+

[/ QUOTE ]
No. It sounds to me like the cabbie miscounted. Was a douche thing to do if the cabbie made an honest mistake.

15% for cabs & restaurants. $1 for buffet server.

i generally tip what ever is between the cost and the next round bill number.

i.e., $12.25 = $15.00

i.e., $14.75 = $20.00

i.e., $26.00 = $30.00

[/ QUOTE ]

this is retarded. for a $46 fare you give $50 (~10%), or do you give $60 (30%)?? i'd hand the cabby $60 and ask for $5 back.

in terms of more realistic examples (that one is like the rarity), for a $19.00 fare you give $20?

weak ass sauce.

You couldn't leave well enough alone, could you dipstick?

Furthering the pattern above for your narrow mindedness:

$19.00 = $25.00

$23.75 = $30.00

$31.00 = $40.00

Go back to the depths of money trading from which you came.

[/ QUOTE ]

sounds good.

extend your theory to the following bills:

$72

$81

$101

$1 for each person at at buffet is what I usually do.

BTW, when calculating tips for restaurants, do you use the amount before of after tax as the basis?
