If she comes over crying and starts telling you all about her problems with her man, you say, "This sounds like personal stuff you should be discussing with Johnny" or "Maybe you should talk about this with one of your girlfriends." Then you get up and say, "I'm going to leave you alone so you can have time to think and talk to whomever you need to." Leave her in your hotel room so she has a safe place to be alone, while you go do whatever the hell it takes to be no part of this until it blows over.

summary/results
I got some quality advice in this thread, and it was really nice to get some of this stuff off my chest. Thanks OOT, you never let me down.
The consensus is that I [censored] up royal, which I already knew, but it was good to see exactly how I [censored] up and what to do and not do next time around. I've been staying away from them so far, but I will likely give it another shot in a few weeks and see if things can work. Most likely though, I'll end up losing them both as friends, which is really too bad, but at least I've learned something. Peace.

On the plus side i admire that you were honest with your friend.
In the future, an approach of "dude, your girlfriend is hot, if you guys ever break out, watch out, i'm going for it" while dangerous, may also be honest and prevent a blown up awkward situation. Being highly forward without seeming to care in general has this affect, though some will handle it better than others.
