You can run bad indefinitely; it just becomes less likely with each passing day that this is the case, most people play worse during extended cold decking. The best thing to do when you're really getting hammered is to move down in stakes, although most players want to win it all back in one shot which "must be just around the corner cuz they're been runnin so bad", and do the opposite of this and go broke then wonder what happened. This is one of the main reasons most people just can't handle playing poker for a living even if they're good enough at the game itself.
