Fashions you love/hate

Nothing per se, but some of the nylon ones look cheap and uninspired. I've gotten a surprising number of compliments on simply-patterned dress socks. I think it's mainly the difference between making the most and the least of an opportunity.

If you're gonna go business casual and wear dockers, you should wear a thicker cotton sock. It's not appropriate or comfortable to wear thin socks with presumably casual (rubber sole) dress shoes that go with dockers. The color/pattern doesn't matter much, provided they aren't too light. Also, Katy, I LOVE that asian chick in the dress a few post up! You don't look anything like that, do you?

Wookie, I like grey or black socks with modest patterns unless I'm wearing some shade of brown/earthy tone, which gets its own matches.

Some have very tight patterns, which seem to go with more clothes than the ones with large or showy patterns, especially multi-colored ones. I've gotten nice compliments on tight herringbone patterns in a light grey. In general, thin, light greys that still call some subtle attention to themselves with a tight, subdued pattern are a nice blend of showing some unexpected style without making a fuss about it. These are the socks I've gotten the most comment upon, including many requests as to wear to buy them. I've generally just found them randomly at assorted department stores. They're almost a project to look for, because so many patterned socks are garish.

The more loud and big patterns can punch up an otherwise plain, subdued look. And if you're daring or good with fashion, matching these to an already more splashy overall look can give a good result. But for that, whoever is checking you out has to have more of an eye his/herself or your result can look overdone. Sticking to simpler things is a safer play that probably pleases more eyes.

Men for sure look dumb like this. It's like having your ball cap sideways. It just has some kind of a 'look how stupid I am' association in my brain.

For women it works if they have a stupendous midsection that curves out nicely at the hips. If you are less than perfect it just makes you look fat. People seem not to understand that most fashions are meant to emphasize some aspect of your physique. You don't want to be emphasizing your poorest features.

I agree 100% and it really doesn't matter much although I hate it worse on Men than women.
