cardo,

"I JUST WANTED A [censored] JOB."

LOL, STFU.

You want a job, except it should make a certain amount of money, should not require you to do a lot of research to find, or hard work, or sales, or customer service, or deal with food, or anything else you don't like, or really involve people controlling your day, or be beneath you, plus also you don't have any skills or experience.

And when people suggest things that don't fit the cardo ideal, you generally respond back in an aloof, snarky, dismissive manner.

Yeah, you're really trying hard to just look for a job.

[ QUOTE ]
It's probably more fun to whine and complain all the time secure in the knowledge that you are one of the smartest people in the world, as opposed to actually going out and trying - and finding out that, lo and behold, there are actually a lot of people out there better and smarter than you at just about everything.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, it is. I've been there and done that, and while it feels good for awhile, it is quite unfulfilling (obviously). One of the most disturbing (and life-changing) things told to me when I was 18-19 years old was by a co-worker who said: "Kyle, you don't do anything unless you're excellent at it, do you?"

Initially I thought nothing of it (in fact, I reveled in the quasi-compliment), but after a few days, I realized what a downer that comment really was.

Hopefully Anacardo can take that to heart. And if not, he can go [censored] himself, because I look back at myself 4-6 years ago and see present-day Anacardo and think "What a [censored] idiot."

[/ QUOTE ]

This is very, very true. There is nothing I hate more than the feeling of incompetence, particularly public incompetence.

Cardo,

"fundamentally, you and people like you want people to lick your boot a little and listen to some [censored] as the price of pedagogy"

Couldn't be further from the truth.

Most of my best discussions/dialogues on 2+2 are with people who quite vehemently and aggressively disagree with me and are obviously quite intelligent about what they are saying.

[ QUOTE ]

So what about all those poor people? What about all those people who just aren't rich? There's acres of diamonds out there for everybody and they're just too stupid to scoop 'em up?

[/ QUOTE ]
LOL, the vast majority of the population relies on the productivity of a few to provide them with opportunities to make money. It's because they cannot produce it for themselves, because they are lazy/stupid/whatever. If you are anywhere near as smart as you claim, you could find something to do.

[/ QUOTE ]

So let me get this straight.

The entrepreneurial class, they're the brave supermen from which all light and goodness flows down to us, the masses. If only people weren't so goddamn stupid, and could figure out how to create value themselves instead of leeching off these heroes with their 'jobs' and 'labor,' we'd all be driving Maseratis and something like the Kingdom of God might dawn on earth.

Is that your picture of society?

"Oh, well, when you put it THAT way..."

[/ QUOTE ]

Look jackass, entreprenuers do drive society. How do you think anything new is created? Every company starts from someone. It's easy for you to laugh them off as "divine supermen" but that is more or less what they are for the economy. The vast, vast majority of the population does rely on the entrepenurial class to provide opportunities for jobs. Maybe the only reason isn't that they are dumb or lazy, but it's true. Many people tend to not be able to create any real value (read: an achievement, being highly competent at thier jobs, etc.) and thus do not advance and have nothing to show for it. You are one of these people. You claim to be smart, but you don't realize that it is not smart to be lazy and consistently pursue leisure at the expense of what provides you that comfort (money). And yes, if there is one thing you can count on, it is going to be that the general masses are stupid. If you aren't, you should be able to rise above them.

You should think about this quote from Calvin Coolidge:

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

All,
I agree that you are largely right about anacardo. However, I think you guys are really zooming in on his bad points here and just really nailing him to a cross on them. Sure everyone has bad attitudes, and they tend to stick out to us a lot more than the good ones. I like anacardo, and I think he comes off pretty immature in this thread. But these attacks against him aren't what this thread is for, and they have run their course. I suggest we try to head this thread into a more positive direction, and if you can't do that maybe try not posting in it at all.

Anacardo,
I do think you could do a better job of listening to these guys, and I do think they are trying to help you and have some very sound advice. My heart goes out to you, and good luck. I suggest you buy a book on something very technical (I'm thinking computer programming or web design might be right for you) and absolutely devote yourself to the excellence of it. If you do that, you could take a certification test and get a decent paying job fairly quickly where you will be able to show off your intelligence and ability to learn, adapt, and work hard.

Best of luck man.

You don't like it, what's it to you? I don't want to throw myself into, say, time-share sales because I think it would be an awesome challenge to try to sink or swim in precisely the sort of thing I'm worst at. Work is stupid and lame. That's time and effort I could be spending on fencing tournaments or this sweet new essay collection. Why is this attitude personally offensive to you?

Cardo,

In the spirit of einbert's post, what jobs have you applied for so far?

This is an excellent question, and one several of us are hoping to hear the answer to.
