#17 in the IMDB Top 250 viewers ratings, above Usual Suspects and GoodFellas

City of God is a magnificent film, but I think #17 is exaggerated, imdb is a little biased in favor of recent movies.

I guess no ranking can satisfy everybody, but I agree that City of God is magnificent and it deserved the accolades it had in its year. I also enjoyed Constant Gardener very much, although it is not as good as City of God.

Hot Fuzz
A hilarious comedy. Exactly what you would expect from the makers of "Shaun of the Dead". I love these movies because they are smart parodies, more like Mel Brooks films and not like "Not Another (insert word here) Movie". I was worried in the beginning that I would just see the characters as Shaun and Ed, but there was no problem. It's also a violent and gory movie. I wasn't sure if it would be when I went in, nor am I surprised that it was though. I really enjoyed this film. It's right below SothD in terms of quality (A+, A) I recommend it highly for a great laugh. Just don't go if you are squeamish.

A Scanner Darkly
As someone who is so straight and narrow I'm taking this film as a pretty accurate representation of how people act when they are addicted/ on drugs.
The shaded look to the movie is quite unique and interesting. The story is good and the characters are interesting. It might be a little out there for some to watch.

Buddy Boy

I was surfing the On Demand section looking for something interesting when I came upon this film. It is an independent film directed by Mark Hanlon.

I'm big on abstract films and this definitely fit the bill. The story is about an introvert (Aiden Gillen) and an exploration of his dark and lonely path through life. It is a really interesting character study and Gillen is excellent in the film. It is definitely a strange film, but I really enjoyed it. 8/10

I was purposely vague with this review because I did not want to give away anything. If anyone would like me to expand further on this let me know, as it is not particularly mainstream.

Cleo From 5 to 7
1962 movie from Agnes Varda, one of the founders of the French New Wave. The movie is about the life of Cleo between 5pm and 6:30pm in June 21 (longest day of the summer).
The movie has a little mini-movie inside which features Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. It was great.
The movie has a chapter that reminded me very much of Before Sunrise.
I was very tired at the beginning of the movie and was having trouble getting in on the flow of the movie, but the second half was very good and I forgot about being tired.
Nice movie if just for the impressive work in the last 15 minutes.

Black Book -- A superb film set during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in World War Two; the main character is a Jewish woman who joins the Dutch resistance and infiltrates Nazi HQ in The Hague by romancing one of the Gestapo leaders. It sounds a bit silly but the central performance by Carice van Houten is absolutely amazing -- she’s like Kirsten Dunst except taller, more attractive, and better at acting. The script by Gerard Soeteman and Paul Verhoeven (who directed) is brilliant; despite many twists and turns the plot never gets confusing and is never predictable. Aside from all that, the set design is totally convincing.

I've watched a couple of movies produced by Val Lewton and mentioned them already, and here's some more.

I walked with a Zombie

I've seen this before a long time ago and thought it was a little dull, but liked it a whole lot more this time around. Many of the scenes and dynamics are subtle, interesting and complex, and I thhought it was a really put-together film in that respect. It was also good to see an old 40s movie where the West Indian ex-slaves are given real dialogue and act normally, none of that 'I hears ya, massah' stuff.

But mostly, some of the shots - just beautiful. The tall black zombie is extremely striking, as is the very beautiful zombie wife. The walking through the crops to get to the voodoo ritual, the walking along the beach...just breathtaking.

I really enjoyed this movie, which is sometimes described as 'Jane Eyre by the sea'.

The Bodysnatcher

An interesting and dark little tale, and the only one I've seen where Karloff plays a thoroughly bad sort. And it's a great performance, maybe Karloff's best. For not only is the man he plays larger-than-life (almost pantomime) in a lot of scenes, his words and the way they are delivered show a much more striking and complex character. For example, Karloff's character, a bodysnatcher, is blackmailing a respectable doctor who uses the fresh corpses he delivers, and we find out eh's doing this not just monetary gain, but to see the great physician bend to his will. Again, liked this a lot.

EASY MONEY

It's a so so gambling movie where kim basinger is a degenerate gambler who's losing her husband ray liotta. And looks to majician Danny Devito to help her get her money back.

The movie is pretty predictable but some awsome acting from Tim Roth... (Resivoir Dogs) Helps.

Lots of meaningless subplots drain down the movie but a GREAT twist ending makes the movie get a few stars IMO

From the creators of Shaun of the Dead comes this movie. It was very funny. It started a bit slow, but it keeps building up and the last 20-30 minutes are non-stop laughter. It was excellent.
