Default Re: killing someone who is trying to rob you

If someone pointed a loaded gun at me and I had to option to make him die immediately, I would take it regardless of what he was trying to do. I think that simply pointing a gun at me puts my life in enough immediate danger that taking another life is completely justified at that point. Guns misfire, people do erratic things - even the smallest chance of that gun going off isn't worth risking my life.

Having said that, I can't imagine a scenario when that would ever happen. I don't own a gun and never plan to, and even if I was somehow carrying one when someone pointed their's at me, I would think that reaching for mine would only increase my chances of getting shot.

My general thought is that I am not cool with making people dead, and i will allow myself to be mugged if the only way to avoid it is killing the guy. That's a slightly far fetch hypthetical.

Then the rest of us will compensate for your pacifism and exceed our quota of dead muggers.....

But I also think I, you, einbert and mr. Christian fundamentalist who thinks poker players are equivalent to muggers, have no authoroty to decide if another person should die. I'm not saying you can't kill in self defence either, I'm arguing against being proud of killing such people because you don't think they deserve to live. If you think killing a person that points a gun to your head is necessary for self defence, go ahead. But killing him in that situation is a necessary evil, not something good that you were fortunate enough to get in a situation to do without being punished.

This is why I don't hang with girls who have opinions on stuff.

If someone is trying to using deadly force against me I am sure as hell going to kill them if I have the ability to do so... regardless of the situation.

pergesu, wtfsvi,

Do your mothers still pick out your clothes?

Who makes up the courts? Individuals, each prone for error? Or robotic scientists who always get the facts right? Say some dude breaks into my house. Threatens me, wants my worldly possessions. Some big committee can more accurately assess what was going on there than I can? They're going to be right more often than I am? Based on second hand accounts, and input from the mugger's lawyer who's getting paid to clear his client's name?

You're essentially arming the criminals with your philosophy. It's much safer to threaten when you don't have to worry about any violent, potentially deadly repercussions. And your assessment of the average citizen is insulting, frankly. We're not a bunch of retards who can't think, discriminate between right and wrong, and need a parental government to get us through a sticky situation.

btw, I don't own a gun, and in most mugging situations I'd empty my wallet. But I believe whole heartedly in a person's right to defend himself.

I've had a gun to my face a couple times. At the time, I would have loved to put a hole in their head...probably would have smiled while I did it.

Looking back tho....I'm glad it didn't go down that way.

All that being said, I've got no problem with putting someone like that down.

If he's asking for money, I'm giving it to him. If he takes my money and then says he's going to kill me, I'm tearing his throat out with my teeth if I have to.

[/ QUOTE ] You have the right to defend yourself. You have the authoroty to do whatever you have to do to protect yourself, including killing this guy. If you fixed your reading comprehension you would see that that is not what I'm arguing against.

That you have the right to kill him if you think that is how to best promote your own protection does not mean that killing him is a good thing. And it does not mean you have the authoroty to decide if he deserves to live or not, you just do what you have to do in that situation.
