[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] wtf is with all the yankee optimism this month has been a disaster for them before the season they were probably >60% to win the division and now they're prob like 33% a 4 game hole is huge, i dont care if the red sox have blown bigger leads before [/ QUOTE ] I hate the Yankees a lot but they are missing most of their starting pitchers. I'm not sure if they will be able to come back but they could. [/ QUOTE ] the yankees have a great team, they've just built themselves a bigger hole than most people are realizing [/ QUOTE ] 4 games? Seriously? |

"As for my post saying this was not a "bad" series for the Yankees I was looking at it from the perspective of how the two teams matched up."
I think the thing you miss when you look at the Sox winning three close games is that there was a lot of luck in it not being a lot worse. To quote from someone else on another board; [ QUOTE ] For the 3 game series, the Sox batters/Yankee pitcher combination yielded a combined: .362/.449/.647/1.096, with 15 BB and 11 Ks. On the other hand, the Yankee batters/Red Sox pitcher combination yielded a combined: .269/.336/.389/0.725, with 9 BB and 24 Ks. [/ QUOTE ] Sox performed significantly better just not with the runners on and when you get your hits is largely a matter of luck. |

Seriously? [/ QUOTE ] yah..last year like at mid season they were 4 or 5 games backa nd still won. They blew a 5 run lead in the 8th, had a rookie who was rushed off the DL pitch game two vs. Beckett, and had a rookie who had 2 starts in double A and one start in the majors pitch vs Dice K..give up 4 HR's in a row...and yet they still almost won every single game. Matsui was out, Posada was out, Damon was out for 2/3 of the games and they had Doug M/W. Nieves/K Thompson as replacements. You'd think the Yanks could do better than KThompson and WNieves though...I mean there has to be a better OF than KThompson available. Yanks are fine especially given both CMW and Moose are back in the rotation in the coming week and Posada and Damon and Matsui will be back also. They have a 3 game set next week..if they play well this week and get 2/3 the next they could be tied after next weekend. Not likely given the way Boston is playing but still...its a joke to say they are in a hole. |

i understand the yankees missed 2 of their best starters, but is that really room for optimism? that their depth sucks? ok, so they were missing posada/matsui and damon for a game, should it be held against the sox that they have guys like cora, hinske, pena and mirabelli instead of scrubs?
its not like wang would've turned the corners, he's got a ~5 era in 40 career innings vs. the sox. i know mussina has decent numbers in his career vs. the sox, but his last 2 years he's had era's of 4.76 and 7.20, its not like these are guaranteed wins they missed. i'm not sure how you can really put all the blame on the starters, anyways, i know the bullpen is overworked, but i don't have to go through the box score to prove that they got pounded this weekend. the yanks had a lead in all 3 games and couldn't hold it. cheers to the sox. |

Just because they could win the next series doesn't mean the hole doesn't exist. I don't think the hole is huge, but I bet their chance of winning the division is significantly worse than it was ten days ago. |

[/ QUOTE ] If schilling, beckett, and wakefield went down...and then Manny went on the DL, and JD had a bum back, and then Veritek got injured. And yet the Sox still were in every game vs. the Yanks you wouldn't be optmistic and think, well all things considered we're not that bad off? a healthy CMW or Chase Wright? a healthy Mike Mussina or Karstens 1 day of the DL? no big difference?...gimme a [censored] break. We were lucky to be within one or two runs in both of the final two games. Depth is obv a problem...but most teams would be hurt if basically 4, Moose/CMW/Karstens/Pavano, of their 6 starters were injuried. |

lol @ mirabelli not being a scrub.
zero c'mon you know about small sample sizes, don't you? quite frankly a 5 ERA vs the red sox isn't bad, either. you really can't argue that legitimate top 2 starters aren't an improvement over waiver-wire fodder like karstens and chase wright. and i'd love to see the team that can go 8 deep with starters. given how balanced this rivalry has been the past few years, this is just the sox making up for the 5 game drubbing the yankees put on them last august. |
