I still believe this kind of comes down to an internal misunderstanding of the nature of their friendship...
Jordan, I'm pretty sure you would take an edge vs. me on the golf course and gladly take my money if I agreed to the spot, even if it was a ridiculous spot. But would you really go out of your way to create an unfair edge? I also doubt you would let me gamble away enough money to devastate my life, but who knows, you are a cold-ass mofo. I really think the moral of the story is, Know who your friends are. |

I really think the moral of the story is, Know who your friends are. [/ QUOTE ] This is true and is the crux of this situation IMO. I think Ram overestimated his friendship with Phil. Of course I would never do this to you, but we wouldn't be gambling for 20k a hole either. Ram obviously isn't rich enough that 20k a hole is nothing to him, which is what gambling amongst friends usually is, nothing. edited for clarity |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I think I posted something like this in one of the other threads, but I'm still confused as to how this situation: A wants to gamble with B B gets A to accept these conditions A loses A doesn't pay = B is a scumbag [/ QUOTE ] You missed out the bit where B lied to A to get him to accept the conditions. Some think the lying is acceptable and all part of the game, others don't make a living by gambling on golf. [/ QUOTE ] FYFMP. [/ QUOTE ] Neither do I, but I have gambled for serious amounts of money before on the golf course. When I first started I was naive to this and lost and took my lumps and paid like a man and learned how the game is played for real money. I am still a lifetime loser at golf. Don't you think it says something that anyone that has golfed for serious money has the same outlook on this? |

People that have branded Ivey a cheat/hustler have no concept of gambling/honor and definately have not played high stakes golf.
Good to hear that you are a man of honor Jordan. Welchers deserve to be dealt with, 1.8 is no laughing matter, if I was Ram I wouldn't even come to town without a good down payment on his debt. |

Hey neither do I and no I haven't gambled for serious money at golf. However, I think it at least possible that some people who do, don't lie about their handicaps and consider it cheating to do so.
To be honest, it sounds like a sleazy way to make money and I'm surprised PI stooped to this*. Being a poker pro by comparison seems a very respectable profession. * If that's how it all went down of course! |

* If that's how it all went down of course! [/ QUOTE ] Right, and that's kind of the problem...we have to rely on Ram's (or someone's) interpretation of how egregiously Phil lied--in a context where most experienced people seem to agree that lying is standard--but we know for certain that Ram is refusing to pay after having lost. This doesn't look good for Ram. However, I think Ivey should offer to split the debt in half and compel Ram to pay the rest. That way Phil looks reasonable (acknowledging that his "friend" gambled over his head but not that he was "cheated"), and it's hard for Ram to find a way out. Also better to have a guy agreeing to pay up $1M than refusing to pay up $2M. |

doesn't phil seem to have all the characteristics of a total sicko gambler.... how does he always manage to keep from falling off the edge? in golf gambling, the losing player always seems to dig himself a deeper hole. i honestly think that sicko gamblers have a responsibility to one another to prevent things from getting out of control, especially if tilt is in play (and we know from the ram v rugby match that ram is capable of extreme tilt). -ba
