The best way to get started is to read a ton of books and head for the play money tables, I like pokerroom.com because the players take it more seriously there than other sites IMO. When you can beat those soundly start playing the small buyins and work your way up.

put 13k into an investment account
use the other 1k to get a 20" lcd, pokertracker and some books then deposit $50 into one of the sites with nano limits, start playing 5c/10c and work your way from there

Lol, thanks guys. Some relevant and some not so but any help is appreciated. I think I'm going to get my head down into some books and start at the low limits and get a feel for the game.
Noone's really mentioned any coaches. Are there any apart from Ciaffone and Tommy. Any good threads on coaching? TY. Shaz

i only skimmed your post due to laziness but i'll try to offer some advice.
you said you have 14k in savings. keep at least 13k in there. you have no need for that much right now. learn about bankroll management and VARIANCE. start playing in small games even if they are boring. read these forums a lot. read a few books but dont worry too much about them. bonus whore a lot to begin with. word.

Put $13 500 in a bank account with high interest.
get the $500, buy PT and PA - thats about $80 gone so $420 then buy Small Stakes Hold'em and maybe Theory of Poker or Getting Started in Hold'em depending on if your very new or not. Read them loads, play .5/1 with your $350 or so remaining and log like 15 000 hands and post here lots. Make the move to 6max when you got like $500 bucks Then grind it away. Edit: i dont mean lose it, i mean grind and get more. Oops.
