I wouldn't consider myself a degenerate at all, but at the same time I can't imagine what I would be doing right now if it weren't for poker. I probably wouldn't be very happy though.

i'm with shaun. 5m+.
i dont have a need for a lot of money right away, i LIKE my life, i am a 'pro' (for now atleast), 1m just wouldnt cut it. It'd be a tease, it's a lot of money, but i'd just want to play poker with it, and it's not enough that i could live completely outrageous. |

This explanation might sound exaggerated but here it goes.
For those of us who are competitive, which is almost all poker players who aren't casual/recreational it will occur to you at some point at time your getting to old to ever be great at anything competitive. For example, I'm 22. I'm in very good shape but it is already well to late for me to be a great professional athlete at basically any sport I can think of. I have zero artistic or musical talents outside acting, which isn't really competitive so much as a crap shoot of self whoredom in order to have even a chance to be great. Being great at a skill job such as say, medicine, requires years of study and intellect most of us either don't have or don't have the patience for. I know damn well I'm not smart enough to succeed in a world that required that level of professional study. I think for some of us, those of us who wouldn't give this up for any amount of money, we've recognized our chance to be really excellent at something. Being among the best in something, anything, has a value the competitive can't really put a price on. In the traditional sense of 'meaningful', my life might be more so if i say, did something that helped people, contributed to society, raised a family, etc, but i know it wouldn't fulfill ME. This is basically my only shot to be great at SOMETHING, and thats something i can't put a price tag on. |
