That's just it though Neo. Once Vig got Gild's approval, he essentially got 2+2's approval and was no longer a random internet dude. I assumed that the higher ups performed due dillegence. If I had known that all they did was Google, I wouldn't have donated.

What more should they have done? One of Vig's real-life friends has confirmed that the basic story is true - Mrs. Vig really does have cancer.

I don't think any amount of due diligence would have uncovered Vig's motives, especially if he originally meant to use it for the treatment and decided to gamble it up (to have more money for the treatment, of course) instead.

The only thing that could have been done to prevent this would be to have enlisted a reliable third party to collect the donations, hold them in escrow and release them directly to the hospital/doctors for medical bills.

Cut the vigs right out of the process so their hands never touch the money. In the future, that is what should be done.

Yeah these kind of statements really show how easy it can be to scam some types of people. Shifting blame like this is awesome, seriously, but your logic here is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know what kind of magical truth serum could have predicted what Vigs would DO with the money he received... the cancer, lady and gambling problems are all seemingly true - what more could you expect from third parties?
