I saw Pan's Labyrinth again yesterday since my school showed it in its theater. Wow! What a masterpiece. The images are powerful, the story is great, I just really enjoyed this film. What is very interesting is how the images get to you, there are moments you have to turn away for a second, you can feel the pain of the character, or the sadness or the desperation. The movie transports you to this incredible world. It was a pleasure seeing this film again, no doubt I will watch it again as soon as it comes out on DVD.

I just got back from Ghost Rider. It was okay, but I did go with absolutely floor-level expectations. It was better than that (not by much, but better than I thought it would be).
Big dumb entertainment. |

Withnail and I I kind of liked this movie but I think I missed nearly half the dialogue because I couldn’t understand the British accents. Really difficult this time for me. The film is basically plotless. It follows two out-of-work actors when they decide they need a trip to the countryside to unwind (lol, their life is just so stressful). The drunk friends have to deal with the hardships of country living and the advances of a creepy gay uncle who has loaned them his cottage. According to filmcritic, the movie is severely over-rated. But I disagree. The film is 20 years old and supposedly set in the 60s but does not feel dated. At least to me it doesn’t. I was pretty amused by the two main characters but I didn’t pick up any deep meaning from the story. It’s really just a character study of dysfunctional friends; like following drunkards around and watching them try to survive. Kind of funny and kind of sad. I think the film has an authenticity that resonates with people even if there’s a little overacting going on. It’s pretty fun to watch the flamboyant Richard E. Grant portray Withnail in his wonderfully smug and pathetic downward spiral. Totally nails it. I read in one review that Grant is a teetotaler. Hm, I find that hard to believe Paul McGann is good too as “I”. These guys are some cool drunks. Even when slipping in the mud and fighting off starvation they strike a cool pose. Interesting Trivia: Daniel Day Lewis turned down the role of Withnail. What I want to know is, how on earth do you British survive that miserable rainy climate? This movie made me feel really sorry for you. Lol at the end! They smoke the biggest joint I’ve ever seen. Pretty hilarious, especially the way Withnail is laughing like he’s out of his mind. |

Db, if you knew me you'd know why I appreciate this movie. I seem to surround myself with people like these guys. They are certainly loveable losers. Also, I like to think I have that same coolness factor coupled with a state of panic that "I" has in this film. |
