If it were wife/gf. i wouldnt hesitate to shelve my pride and beg to save their life. I would be doing all the other things i possibly could as well, but i would poop in a bag or do anything to save them.

I'm grunching here.
First, this is awful. F you, Vig. It would have been so much better if you just owned up to this from the start. I also want to let everyone who has or is interested in ordering a shirt, that your money is safe with me. I believe heavily in the honor of a gambler, and (as sad/nerdy as this sounds) whatever sort of credibility or reputation I have on 2p2 means more to me than a few thousand dollars. I saw this coming, but I still feel sick about it. |

shaniac, what do you suggest I do with this thread [/ QUOTE ] I've been letting that stay on the condition that daily screenshots etc. are posted at every step of the process, and since it's nothing horribly expensive (t-shirts) and barry greenstein related. am I interested in policing it? not rly, and I would not have a problem if you decided to trash it anyway. (posting this here because we may as well have an open debate about the exact boundaries) |

shaniac, what do you suggest I do with this thread [/ QUOTE ] It's tough, and I don't envy these kinds of decisions that mods have to make. But I think you need to put a stop to it somewhere. If OP in that thread wants to sell t-shirts to people, cool. If he wants to take the money generated from those sales and give it to charity, fine. But caveat emptor. BBV is under no obligation to be the poker world's Center for Altruism, and ultimately there is no way to determine who's scamming and who's not. The funny thing is that these charitable drives become problematic because people are essentially bragging about their donations. In other words, we are more prone to donate to an illegitimate individual or charity if it will readily gain us recognition within the community for generosity. It's wonderful that everyone on BBV is suddenly imbued with the spirit of giving, but it's actually much more efficient if we quietly give to established charities in our own time, without involving 2+2. (edit: at least without involving individual 2+2ers, entrusted to do the right thing with the money, etc.) |

BBV is under no obligation to be the poker world's Center for Altruism, and ultimately there is no way to determine who's scamming and who's not. [/ QUOTE ] Who said BBV is under any obligation to do anything? Part of what makes BBV an amazing community to be a part of is threads like this. If you make blanket rules banning everything even remotely involving money you lose a lot of value added from posters who want to take a lead role and enrich everyone's time here. Allowing threads like this and encouraging the growth of the community is a big part of the reason BBV has become the largest and most successful community on 2p2. What I am saying is that when you mod things aren't black or white and you make judgment calls based on what you feel is best for the forum. I am keeping Mikey's thread open. That is a judgment call I am making. Could Mikey scam everyone? Yea, it's a possibility. But you have to make decisions based on incomplete information, just like in poker, and the information I have based on a large set of criteria make this thread OK in my book. [ QUOTE ] The funny thing is that these charitable drives become problematic because people are essentially bragging about their donations. [/ QUOTE ] maybe you missed the title of the forum [ QUOTE ] In other words, we are more prone to donate to an illegitimate individual or charity if it will readily gain us recognition within the community for generosity. [/ QUOTE ] What is wrong with that? People donate millions of dollars to Opera houses, schools, etc. to have their name on it because it gives them a sense of satisfaction that they are making a difference. Who cares why someone is donating? Money is money and if it's going to a good cause, I don't see what the difference is. [ QUOTE ] It's wonderful that everyone on BBV is suddenly imbued with the spirit of giving, but it's actually much more efficient if we quietly give to established charities in our own time, without involving 2+2. [/ QUOTE ] Or...we could donate monthly to our established charities and also make an effort to educate others on the importance of giving back to the community at large. |
