![]() wanted to see this after watching little children, but didn't get around to it until now--after this thread reminded me. definitely didn't like this one nearly as much. it's well done. top marks for acting. there was simply nothing in it to give it that spark for me. |

Shopgirl
I agree! I rented this movie after reading Dom's review. I went into it with low expectations because I don't always like Steve Martin. I could not have been more pleased. Claire Danes is just wonderful. I could really relate to her Mirabelle - she gives a very real performance of a nice girl falling for an older man. I think a lot of girls can relate to this movie. I know I can. I guess quite a few of the guys on the forum found it boring. I thought it was really touching. Check out what Dom wrote. He gives an excellent review: Dom's Review of Shopgirl |

likely wouldn't have heard of/seen this one if not for tldr. this was the penultimate performance for sellers before his untimely death and he was quite wonderful in this role. overall, quite enjoyed the film. with a running time of 2h10m, however, it did drag on the the picture's detriment. some tighter editing could've propelled this movie into more widely known classic. |

The Prestige: Overall a very good movie, albeit somewhat confusing throughout. 3.7/5.
Poolhall Junkies: A trainwreck of a film with a few cool scenes. The dialogue and acting are pretty lame and you don't feel for any of the characters. Chris Walken is awesome of course, but the main guy is a knob. The pool scenes are also pretty weak. 2/5. Saw 3: Pretty lame. They aimed for extra gore and shocking torture methods instead of a better storyline. I didn't expect much, though. 2/5. Borat: Meh. I never liked Borat on Ali G and I didn't find this too funny. There were a few cute parts, but overall I didn't dig it. 2/5. Children Of Men: Very good film, but I was expecting much more. The ending kinda left me hanging high and dry and I dislike the "make up your own ending" endings. 3.5/5. |

I recently watched Children Of Men too and was actually pretty disappointed by it. I thought it was a great concept for a film (the infertility part), but I thought the execution was pretty poor. I didn't think the whole racial war thing made much sense and they used it as the driving force behind the story. I'd give it the "Film that is most likely to be brought up in future 'Remakes that are better then the original' discussions award for 2006" because I still think its a concept that a great film could be based on.
2.5/5 |

Just rewatched the first one. It's not that close. I had forgotten how damned good that Prince story was.

![]() Christopher Guest and all of his friends do their yearly talent show again. This time it's on the set with a movie production of "Home for Purim", a story about a Jewish family with a dying matriarch, navy son, and estranged gay daughter. Suddenly there's oscar buzz, and hilarity ensues. It bothers me on an intellectual level that he keeps making the same mockumentary every couple years with the same actors just trying out slightly kookier characters. It would bother me more if it wasn't so funny every time. It's pretty average when I fall into the trap of comparing it to the early Guest movies like Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show. It's above average when I actually compare it to other comedies I've seen in the last couple years. "The Internet, hmm..., that's the one with email, right?" |

Just came back from watching Letters from Iwo Jima. Great movie, but didn't make me feel that special fealing when I see something great.
Watching war movies makes me think of the entertainment all that suffering has brought. Uncountable movies, books, plays and videogames have come out of wars. The movie did a great job in bringing out the humanity of some of the characters. Humans are fighting wars and humans that we can relate to. Every human being has something to tell us, some story to convey. It is too sad that war kills them. |
