i know adanthar has said repeatedly that law school was easy for him and he never went to class...i sneak by in the middle of my class

[/ QUOTE ]

to be fair, that's what I was going for, and that's what I got. I was decently in the top 50% after 1L, but didn't see the point of caring about grades at all afterwards. So I borrowed outlines, did the bare minimum and got B's like everyone else. If I wanted the grades/law review combo, I'd have had to work my ass off, of course...other than one guy in my section (who wound up the editor) nobody I knew was smart enough to pull *that* off.

but the point is...who gives a damn? do you want biglaw? no, you don't, and we both know if you're not motivated there it's pointless, so why stress out over it? just graduate in the middle, pass the bar and go take some middling job while making 10x that at poker. trust me, it's great. holla.

It is sort of besides the point but a lot of te mental, emotional and even physical havok that law school curses folks with stems from the fact that law school is one of the only options for liberal arts undergrads that has a payday associated with it. Therefore, tons of people who have no business pursuing a J.D. are motivated by economics and social pressure to enroll and delude themselves into thinking it is a good choice for them. Then, they suffer. I think they need to make the LSAT and 1L year even harder to weed more folks out.

go into debt for a top 20 school over baylor. its not close. law is extremely snobby about where you went to school.

I'm on the recruiting committee at my firm (mid-sized, full service corporate), and I could not disagree with you more. We recruit anywhere from the top 10 schools to our local commuter law school.

There are only so many truly national law schools - Harvard, Yale, Stanford. Otherwise, the best advice I can give you is to go to school were you want to work long term. That doesn't mean you're stuck in [censored] Waco if you go to Baylor, but if the thought of living in Texas makes you cringe, go elsewhere. If Houston/Dallas would be cool, the no student loans thing will be pretty sweet.

i am currently in a canadian law school and i know how easy it is to get caught up in the whole "must work at biglaw or you're a failure".

Do whatever you want. If you want to know the law because you're marketable for a job after, then forget a lower tier school.

If you want to know the law because you just want to know to enhance your business acumen, then take the ride.

I don't go to class, i get a summary and pore over that the month before the exam, and i get a smattering of As and Bs. Thats enough for many biglaw jobs in Canada if you interview well and have a pimped out resume.

so apply that to the US market if you can.

I'm jealous. I still haven't figured out law school half way through. I'm also at a Canadian law school and my [censored] first year marks made me decide to stop trying. I was below average then, I'm below average now, but at least now I have a life. Still figuring out how much of this is a beat and how much is a brag.

Come to BC, nickname the "Disneyland of Law Schools". We all sit around a campfire singing Kumbayah while we study.

Seriously though, law school isn't that nuts other than the two weeks before/during finals and an occasional weekend when a memo is due. Other than that, if you treat it like a job and just make sure you are doing law school stuff from 9-5, M-F, you will be doing more work than most your peers.

Also, studying is not about looking smart in class, its about preparing for the test. Grading is anonymous, so if there is a class where the prof doesn't randomly call on you don't feel obligated to know every little detail about the case. Know enough to follow class discussion, take good notes, and compile you're outline before study week.

Of course, your professors just pin the exams to a dart board, tie on a blindfold, spin 3 times and throw to determine your grades anyway.

I turned down higher ranked schools partly because of money, but I didn't go to the school that offered me most, I went to the school that was a good balance between reputation and scholarship money. Also, I want to be in Boston.

i also have a few friends that i graduated with that were in the same boat. two buddies did 2.5 years in the public defenders office and went out on their own and now make 6 figures and work about 30 hours a week. yeah, they have to deal with criminals a lot but hey someone has too.

[/ QUOTE ]

Can you elaborate this point...I am in the same boat with the other law students here, I think law school is pretty stupid and don't have the motivation I once did. I obviously don't want to do big law anymore, working all those hours is so unappealing to me.

I guess I could say that I'd like to drop out but I have nothing else to do...
