I don't know what health insurers can/can't do, nor what they actually do/don't do in practice. I am probably overly cautious on the issue, but you should be able to get good advice on this. (In fact, if and when you do, please post it.) Edit - for me, (on COBRA right now, which my new employer is picking up) I think it is about 1200/month, but I don't know if that is high or low. |

i have had a pretty sweet work career - involved in enjoyable and cutting edge stuff with ownership positions and good salaries etc. i have not made 6 million playing poker and have no idea if i am capable. i have thought many times about quitting real work for the chance to play poker. at this point, i have decided it's not worth it. i am too old. if i were 22, i may do it for a few years, but i have come to learn that poker money is dwarfed by business money. ownership is the simple key.
this may not be true for others, but i would be remiss if i did not also include the emotional side. i just can't imagine that the sense of accomplishment and reward i would feel from playing a great month of poker would ever compare to what i feel after some big business success, or the execution of a revolutionary idea. |

thanks very much for the honest and insightful response. I am 33 years old, so although I am not one of the young college kids - I certainly can't "coast in" either. The inherent difference between you and me might be that I do not obtain a tremendous amount of pleasure from my professional career. It is a job that is at times interesting, at times rewarding, at times frustrating, but never one that gets me excited. I do not think that great success at poker will make me feel great about myself. However, I do expect that the time and flexibility that playing poker full time will provide me will enable me to take an active role in raising my children, spend more time with my wife, and perhaps later in life take on a less profitable but more rewarding side job - like coaching high school soccer (I used to be a professional soccer player before an injury cut short my career after only 1.5 years). So while I agree with you wholeheartedly that poker will not be a means of fulfillment for me, I think that if I am able to deal with the issues of health insurance, ongoing legality, continued success, etc, - it will provide me with the time and flexibility to fulfill myself through other means that I might not have the time or inclination for if I kept my current professional status. |
