I think this post illustrates why Diablo rules.

El D,

I can certainly relate, though being married has mitigated things to a large degree. However, if my wife is out of town on work or whatever, I am often up until 3am even when working four hours later. Like you, I will find the most banal activities to keep me up -- from reading sub-standard political columns / blogs to playing more poker, etc.

Very interesting.

I'm not concerned about the days that I'm up until 3 reading something or studying, but the days when my hours between 12 and 3 were completely unproductive.

Exactly. Maybe with this has something to do with it. In college I was often up late just to get work done. On weekends I was up late hanging out with people. So it was all "productive" time. So maybe some part of my brain thinks that's still the case, though I clearly do jack [censored] with my time.

It's nice to see others do this, especially successful ones. I've been down on myself lately for not being as productive or learning as much as I could with my free time.

edit: I should also note that on rare stretches where I do get myself to sleep and get all the things done that I need to, I feel way more energized and am 100% more enthused about my lot in life.

Perhaps we have a deep fear of going to bed because we believe that in the short time that we have alive, we must experience as many things as possible or our time is wasted, even if we aren't doing anything productive/interesting while staying away from the bed.

Huh interesting. Maybe that's part of it.

Never understood the phenomenon of the "morning person". I myself am a "night person" that has, through many years of painful training, go to sleep somewhat earlier and get up pretty early on a consistent basis. Took a long, long time to get there, but think it's defintely more efficient.

Also, I always just assumed it was restlessness / low-level stress / mind-racing that keeps people up - have this energy that needs to be expended at the end of the day. Less that they felt like sleep is a waste of time or you're missing out by sleeping.

Although even if I am feeling really complacent (as far as I can tell), I still have the desire to stay up...

-Al

I think learning to add naps to your day is a good way to combat this.

Add me to the list of people who hate the in-bed/out-of-bed transition in both directions.

I have had this problem as long as I remember. I fight sleep. Sometimes I watch TV in bed, and will force myself to stay awake.

El D, did you have a lot of bad dreams when you were a kid? or now? If so, that could be the problem. I used to get night terrors when I was a kid, so I think that my body fought it by staying awake to the point where it is the only way I know how to live.

I also stay up extra late when I have stuff to do the next day. My inner monologue is something along the lines of "If I go to bed now, the time will pass without me knowing it, and then I will have to go to XYZ, but if I stay up I can put off going."

It sux because it is totally irrational and stupid. I know better, but I do it anyway.

The funny thing is whenever I do manage to get up by like 9 or 10 I'm always really glad I did but it almost never happens.

This is incredibly true. I am visiting family/friends at the moment and have gone to breakfast with someone the last 3 days. It is great waking up at 8AM, but I know I'd never be able to sustain it.
