[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] "hawaii ( the big island, where i stayed ) had amazing beaches and scenery but was pretty boring outside of that" should have went to the island of Oahu. [/ QUOTE ] how was that? i've heard Honolulu is great but super expensive and touristy. how was oahu? [/ QUOTE ] The tourist spots suck unless you're a touristy type. But the places that are even slightly more offbeat go up in quality of experience really quickly. I haven't been in 20 years, though. When I lived there, through high school and first couple years of college, I loved the Bamboo Forest in Manoa, Makapu Beach, and the Pali Lookout. But you have to walk all over the Pali Lookout, not just hang around at the most touristy spot there. Hike! Find whatever spots there are there now to hike in that aren't overrun, and it will be very nice. Also, if you're going to go to the Big Island, you owe yourself a day or two to walk around INSIDE the volcano craters. It's absolutely incredible, like being on a different planet. Just fantastic. |

Indonesia - Come for the Muslim extremism, stay for the terrifying mass transit! |

Colombia. [/ QUOTE ] my supervisor's husband is columbian and living in the US now. he has been gone from columbia for about 20 years (he's about 50 now). his family has told him never to come back because he's been gone too long and he will no longer blend in with the locals and would be a target for kidnapping, robbery, murder, etc. |

I must've gotten crazy lucky then. I speak some basic Spanish and stuck out like a sore thumb when I was in Colombia less than a month ago for 10 days on vacation. Didn't have a problem with Bogota, Cartagena, or Medellin. And we went to some pretty shady places far outside of the city center. Hell, I'm even thinking of making a 2nd trip down there middle of this year to see Cali and Medellin chicas again. Then again, stay away from Colombia. Don't want a bunch of gringos invading the country with dolares and inflating the price of everything. |
