[ QUOTE ] shane, What % chance do you think there is that something like what I've described is currently going on in major tourneys? [/ QUOTE ] I would guess 100% [/ QUOTE ] So, you know of, or strongly suspect, that there is a backer who employs several horses, some of whom are in the tournament with the sole function of dumping chips to other players? |

[ QUOTE ] shaniac, Are you saying you're unaware of the fact that there's a lot of cheating in poker in both cardrooms and online? [/ QUOTE ] In the abstract, yes I am aware. It's a question of how systemic it is. I'm asking for specifics. [/ QUOTE ] when i was sweating a satellite at the WSOP this summer, i saw a guy pass a chip to the shortstack so that he wouldn't be blinded out on the bubble. someone else at another table got knocked out that hand and the chip passer and passee (sp?) both got main event seats. i have no idea if these guys had any incentive to do this or if they were working as a team from the beginning. but, i saw this happen and think that having teams or alliances in poker just makes this type of scenario much more likely whether it being chip dumping, passing, softplaying or whatever. also, when i interviewed todd brunson he told me that he and his father check it down when it is just the two of them in a hand. is that team play, soft play, cheating, a father/son thing, or just a regular part of the game? |

shaniac,
"with the sole function of dumping chips to other players?" I can't speak for The Camel, but that's not what I said is likely to be going on. I simply said I think there are probably backers w/ multiple horses in tournies who take advantage of that at opportune times. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, but the backer has to convince or incentivize the horse to act against his self-interest and that seems like a major hurdle. Feels like we are going around in circles here. I am probably naive, it does probably go on, but to acheive a fucntioning, cheating stable still seems far-out to me as a practical matter. |

[/ QUOTE ] Yes. Although I got my wires crossed slightly. I was guessing that chip dumping between friends or share holders happens in every tournament. The backer scenario is obviously far rarer, but I have seen it in action several times while playing major tournaments. |

El Diablo,
Sheet/Bax back many players. Many of the players owe large amounts of makeup to them. They need to win massive prizes to clear the makeup and make money. If they chip dump/pass chips, they are acting against their own financial interests. That's a huge incentive to play straight up. |

[/ QUOTE ] This makes sense, is horrifying, but I'm happy to say that I don't think I know anyone desperate enough to participate in such a scheme (and I know some desperate people, too). |

Roswell,
Uh, if a backer wanted to do something like this, obviously the players would have a financial incentive for doing it. Getting out from under a ton of makeup seems like a good one. |

Btw.
My experiences are mostly in Europe. I have no reason to believe Sheets and Bax operate in this manner and in no way do I mean to insinuate that they do. |
