birdy,
When good people are making them, these bets aren't about skill anyway. And a lot of people are definitely underestimating the ability of these guys to amass huge rolls and go busto. Look at it this way. Many of you know online guys under 21 who have built rolls from nothing to $100k+ or even $500k+ or more and then gone busto. That seems f'ing impossible, but it happens a lot. Hell, it's hard to find a Scandinavian player who DOESN'T do that routinely. If that's going on left and right online, why is it hard to believe that someone live playing bigger can do that for $5M, $10M or more? |

[/ QUOTE ] Many of those Scandinavians aren't in it for the money, their prime motivation is to become the best, so they build and build and play higher and higher and look for tougher and tougher opponents until they ultimately go busto and then rinse and repeat. I guess almost any player whose goal is to become the best is likely to go busto over and over as it is the chance to sit and play i.e. 1k/2k vs Ivey and try to outplay him is what motivates them, not to find a big +EV-game. I see that this is hard to understand for 2+2'ers since they are so focused on game selection, +EV, sufficient roll, risk of ruin etc.; but remember that if that had been the focus of the majority of poker players, then poker would barely exist. |

What I don't get is how someone like DN who has grinded all his life to be at the top of the games royalty risk enough of his roll to risk being busto either at the big game and/or the golf course? That I don't get at all. At least DN is honest enough with himself and the public on telling everyone his situation and how he quit the big game for good until his roll is replenished. For every DN who comes clean, I bet there are 5 other 'superstars' who are struggling much worse. Poker is a sick game.

If you read his past Cardplayer articles it talks about always taking shots with low money and when he actually did good for awhile getting blackout drunk and waking up to an empty box. I dont know how much he lost at golf but I remember telling a few people when he first started playing i wouldnt doubt if they broke him. He is cocky and has gamble and seems to overestimate his abilities and doesn't seem to admit defeat easily. I got this from his blog posts but it was further emphasized to me from watching high stakes poker. Throw in dealing with old school hustlers and nothing would really surprise me. |

Quentin Tarantino never went to high school--nothing to do with this but thought I'd throw it in.
As interesting as Negreanau's high stakes adventuring is, the greater transformation that I've watched with interest over the years is his growth as a writer. Maybe he has a great editor or a ghost--look up some of his old posts from back in the day--he was terrible and now doesn't know how to write a bad (if overly self absorbed) sentence. Always readable. |

[ QUOTE ] I'd put the O/U at $2.5M in bankroll. One more bad year and we may see this topic come up again. [/ QUOTE ] I'll take the over because if it was 2.5 mil, he'd be putting up anywhere from 60 to 80% of his roll to play in the 4k/8k game…and that ain't right [/ QUOTE ] Good point but he has not played the big game for quite awhile now. |

[/ QUOTE ] I think there is a "Little Big Game" where they play 2k/4k (instead of usual 4k/8k) that is like DN, Patrik Antonius, Eli, Barry and some more folks that has been running recently. |

I think the "2nd tier" Big Game is 1k/2k. They don't play 4k/8k very often.

This is what he posted in his blog, in response to this thread:
"I'm short on cash after making a few investments. Even after the 3rd place finish that's still true. My version of "short on cash" may just be a little different than some people's." DN's Response |

He also just released a book, though I don't know how much he expects to make from that
