Slim O.D.,

Are you familiar with this group?
http://www.nora.cc/index.html

I've read that they help those that suffer from visual problems (motor, perception and processing) resulting from neurological problems.

[/ QUOTE ]

no, not familiar with them.....are you on the team?

I am 53 and just today started having some blurring of things at a distance. I have had to use reading glasses for about 5 yrs but long distance vision has been very good until today. I was diagnosed with Type2 diabetes about 6 months ago.
My question is should do you think this blurring today is more likely to be part of aging or from the diabetes?
Also, would you recommend i see a lasik doctor first or an eye doctor first (or are they the same)? Thanks in advance

[/ QUOTE ]

It's very unlikely that you just suddenly experienced blurry distance only. More than likely its a little more gradual but you havent noticed it til today. If you did really had a sudden drop in vision it is should probably affect your near vision too. You should see your eye doctor......not lasik doctor and definitely not family doctor.

I am young, and sometimes (around 3-4 times a year) my right eye goes through a 2 or 3 week stage where it twitches and is constantly uncomfortable...why is this?

[/ QUOTE ]

if by twitching, you mean one of your eyelids twitches.....it's called myokemia. Either you drink too much caffeine, stressed out , or lack of sleep or idiopathic (no reason)....but it's not a problem...ignore it.

With proper cleaning every night, how long can I wear my Accuvue one-day disposable lenses before I should toss them?

[/ QUOTE ]

You can wear them however you want, they aren't going to explode in your eye. But the longer you wear them the more dirt they will attract and the less comfortable they will be. WHen you buy 1 day lenses, you are paying for the cleanliness and the convenience.

are you an md? i always get confused to whos who in the eye business.

[/ QUOTE ]

No...I'm an OD. Everybody gets us confused. Think of it this way

Optician = Pharmacist
Optometrist = Family Doctor
Ophthalmologist (MD) = Surgeon

Optician dispenses the glasses/contacts based on the presciption by the optometrist or ophthalmologist but he's not a "DR". An Optometrist is a "DR" but not an MD....kinda like a dentist or chiropractor.

[/ QUOTE ]

are you serious? a pharmacist goes to as much school as an OD and faces similar (or more rigorous) academic challenges in their path to their careers than an OD. They, too, hold the title "Dr." an optician, otoh, went to vocational school, and are similar to dental hygienists.

Family doctors are MD's just as Surgeons are. they just specialized in a different field.

optometrists are doctors, just as pharmacists, dentists, podiatrists and chiropractors are.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have severe astigmatism in my left eye, along with nearsitedness. It's so bad that eyeglasses don't correct my vision. I basically see out of my right eye, and have terrible depth perception.
Are there any treatment possiblities? My opthamologist said lense replacement surgery. Could lasix or a similar surgery fix or improve my vision?

[/ QUOTE ]

I would need to know more history about your eyes but from the sounds of it, you have a lazy eye in which case you are really only using one eye so even if you could fix it with LASIK, you would still only be using one eye and still have poor depth perception.

what kind of kickbacks do you get from contact companies for prescribing a certain kind? can you tell me anything about the acuvue oasys? I just got them because I have really dry eyes from accutane and they are incredible, light years better than the acuvue advance. how well does optometry pay?

my doc told me about a meth user patient she had, and the meth crystallized at the back of his eyeball and looked like snow, ever seen anything like this?

[/ QUOTE ]

We get no kickbacks from contact lens companies. The only thing that we get is a better price on certain brands of lenses if we dispense a certain amount. SO basically, some companies will have tiered prices and our office will fall into one tier or another depending on how many of a certain brand we dispense. But that's no different than buying anything else in bulk and getting a better price.

Yes right now Oasys is my lens of choice. Excellent lens, very breathable and comfortable.

Optometry is like any other self employed business.....if you are a shrude businessman, you can make over 500K......probably a lot more but that would not be the norm. But on average I would say anywhere from 80K to 300K.

There are no meth users in canada.
