I'm transferring to the University of the Pacific in January to (hopefully) compete in the top flight of collegiate parliamentary debate.

Sweet... my neck of the woods. Stockton is a crappy town, but you learn to love it. I lived in Stockton for 7 years, 4 while going to Pacific and for 3 after I graduated. I still work in Stockton as well. There's some decent places to eat, and quite a variety in the type of food you can find.
If you have any questions about Pacific or Stockton in general let me know!

I had discovered Rand while in Paris and that really sparked my interest in libertarianism and political philosophy. By January 2006 I had become an anarcho-capitalist, a libertarian with a capital L, i.e. you can ask me any question beginning with "should government do x" and my answer will be no. I was influence in no small way by various members of the 2+2 politics board and of course the writings of people like Murray Rothbard and David Friedman.

I don't want this thread to get too political or heated, but ugh please tell me you don't actually take Rand's philosophy (not economic theory) seriously? Tough to hear from someone with good taste in music

Rand isn't consistent enough for me.

In all seriousness, I like the heroic portrayal of the individual, in general, and I still really enjoy Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. But her pure philosophical work is pretty meh, at a certain point.

When I get home tonight, I think I'll reread this from start to finish.

I meant to make a post last night.

My name is Jared L. to the surprise of many I'm sure. I'm 26, will be 27 the day after new year's day. I'm currently a graduate student in Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. My main research area is industrial organization oddly enough. I'm studying in general what happens when one agent is informed about the quality of them or their product and may reveal the information they have to another agent in order to convince them that they/their product is of high quality. I'm doing this from a theory perspective and will also be running experiments where people go to the lab and play a game that is a simpler version of the one I solved in my model.

That was boring.

I'm originally from Oregon and went to undergrad at the University of Oregon. During my sophomore year I studied in Sevilla, Spain for a semester. It was an incredible experience and I met some friends there with whom I'm still in contact. As you may have guessed, I fell in love with a soccer team named Sevilla Futbol Club.

I got married two summers ago. My wife is from Hawai'i. When I finish grad school - next year, woot! - I hope to get a job, in order of preference, in Hawai'i, the West Coast (Oregon then Washington, then California then BC), New Zealand or Australia. I hope to work in academia as a professor, but would take a job in Hawai'i either as an instructor or possibly even teaching at one of the few excellent private high schools.

As far as poker goes, as I was sahying when chatting with BobO last night, I've been all over the place. I've been playing 3 years now. I've played SNGs, up to 55s with regularity as well as a handfull of 109s, NL cash, up to NL200, and limit 6 max, up to 3/6 and an utter failure of a shot at 5/10. With some exceptions I pretty much always build my roll up pretty nicely and then cash out a bunch of it and rebuild. There have been a couple times where I managed to keep it in there for awhile and have been a couple times where a massive downswing meant I had to rebuild but that's the standard. In general I really need to take poker more seriously, though that may have to wait until I finish grad school to make a huge effort.
