The Tropicana's rooms are ok for the price and the poker is soft. Like any other "older" csino on the strip it needs some updating. Actually because the staff is so nice it's one of my favorite places to go. They spead low limits and 1/2 NLHE and if there's enough interest 2/5 NLHE. Usually they're down to one table by late night early morning.

The poker room staff are ultra friendly and know their stuff. The waitress that comes on shift around midnight is a cutie. I think her name is Kristi.

If you are looking for a nicer room to play the MGM is right across the street but they're a-holes. Nice place though.

I've never found the dealers or floor people at MGM to be a-holes. They're a little quieter in the box than many, and are often a bit more "professional". I don't equate that to a-hole. They're certainly preferable to most of the Bellagio staff.

Tropicana has a decent location and if you don't like their poker room you can find poker at MGM, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay, Monte Carlo, and Alladin all within pleasant(ish) walking distance. I'm not a huge fan of Excal, don't like Luxor, and hate Mandalay, but not everybody shares my dislikes.

Tropicana is a reasonable on-strip low-budget choice.

I agree the MGM staff were very professional and friendly when I played there a lot in August.

Go to the Trop room between 6pm and 2am from Wed-Sun and see Terry, tell him I sent you (yeah, say "52s from 2+2", he knows who it is).

Terry's unofficially taken over the room, and is doing things to make it a much more player-friendly room, and have it be a fun atmosphere where tourists can come and get their drink on, and make big splashy pots in the 1/2. Wants it to be laid-back, and is looking for the clientele that'll oblige, i.e. he's hoping the POS grumpy locals faze themselves out, he wants it to be a tourist joint.

Usually at night there'll be 1-2, rarely 3 1/2NL games going, $$$ on table depends, but like most 1/2NL in town, the $$$'s there for the taking.

The room is a very, very simple small room (right now, before the construction starts), but Terry and the crew will make sure you're having a good time.

If you are happy playing low limit you might consider downtown. Rooms/food are cheaper and games are plentiful at Binions, Golden Nugget, and the Plaza.

I like the trop - best value on the strip hands down. Paradise tower is best.

The very first time I ever played Hold Em was there. At the time the poker room was a JOKE, but have not been in a year, and it may be different.

The "Garden" rooms are crap and are usually the ones with the cheapo rates.

Call the Imperial Palace. You can get rooms VERY cheap depending on when you go. Plus, it is center strip and good walking distance to most of the good card rooms.

I just booked a room there for March at $50/night.

This is where my friends (me and three other lame 20-something white guys) and I stayed on our last Vegas trip in June '06. It was perfect for what we wanted: a room to sleep in.

We got the garden rooms and they were fine. They were clean and served their purpose.

I didn't get a chance to play poker there but one of us only played there. He said it was a blast. The game was friendly and everyone was having a good time. It looked like they were only spreading 1-2NL. No autoshufflers in the tables, either.

Also, Tropicana has perfect access to the MGM poker room. I think you're actually closer than if you actually stayed at MGM. Just cross the overpass from Trop over to MGM, go down the steps and you're there. I did most of my playing at MGM.

Excalibur is also across the street and they have a tram you can take to Luxor and Mandalay Bay. I don't think the poker is that great at any of these places though, but that's just my opinion. It depends on what you want.

I would recommend Trop if you're just going on a poker trip with the guys, but I wouldn't take my wife there.
