Meh - standard. Actions have consequences.
Back in my day, they would have nitesticked him into a bloody pile of douchebag - the glory days of the neuropsych protests at UCLA. I wonder if pouring salt water on him before buzzing him would give a better contact..... MM MD |

[ QUOTE ]
Reef: Don't bother with all this 'common sense' and 'rational thinking' - when you don't do what the police say, they have every right to do whatever they want to you. There's a reason why police are given the rights they are - they were the most intelligent students in school, and moreover have incredible benevolence towards all mankind. [/ QUOTE ] yes, use your common sense and tell me whats wrong with a cop asking someone to stand up when they are trespassing? people really need to shut up about "ohhhh noez cops can tell us to do anythign! and wez has to do itz!!" HE ASKED HIM TO [censored] STAND UP HOW TERRIBLY DIFFICULT IS THAT |

Whenever a thread like this shows up (Degen's brother getting bodyslammed by cop, cop punching some poor dude in the face) I can never believe how seemingly half of 2p2 thinks this is justifible.
My theory is that the people who think this kid deserved to be tasered are somewhat older, probably somewhat bitter, guys who generally hate young people (in a Grandpa Simpson "these young ruffian trouble makers" etc. etc. way). |

[ QUOTE ]
on a college campus, it's ridiculously easy to differentiate the hobos they try to keep out versus students. Also, if he's typing a paper or research type pages (versus porn, games, etc) , it's a pretty clear sign he's a student. [/ QUOTE ] question, have you ever been in or near the UCLA library? secondly, its not the cops job to try to determine if he really is a student or not, they already gave him that oppurtunity (student ID). At that point, asking him to stand up doesn't seem like an infringement on his rights. |

[ QUOTE ]
The university owns the library and they make policies about who can enter. Student can enter of course, provided they abide by the policies, which he was not. The second he is asked to leave by the library officials and refusing he is trespassing. Did he expect the library to make an exception for him, "Na you don't need id, that's just a policy for everyone else" [/ QUOTE ] He did leave within 5 minutes of being asked. In fact, he was on his way out when the real police came. I mean come on, they can't make a small exception during midterms when it was probably obvious that he's a student? You're typing up a research paper and are finishing up a thought/idea ..or you found a really good source to help you but want to save some of it's contents.. you quit RIGHT THEN and there when the library staff ask you to leave? Come on. [ QUOTE ] While the cops did not HAVE to taser him [/ QUOTE ] yep |

Stop thinking that refusing to listen to authority (when they are right) makes you cool. |

Nothing's wrong with a cop asking someone to stand up. Its just [censored] up when they tazer someone because they don't. How is that even close to being necessary? They outnumber him and could easily subdue him and handcuff him if they want to use force to get rid of him.

I'm 26, but my parents raised me correctly so I know not to act like a irresponsible, rebellious little twit and love seeing them reap what they sow.

[/ QUOTE ] Totally besides the point. But yes, I did tour the campus as a high school senior. [ QUOTE ] secondly, its not the cops job to try to determine if he really is a student or not, they already gave him that oppurtunity (student ID). At that point, asking him to stand up doesn't seem like an infringement on his rights. [/ QUOTE ] He was on his way out. The cops basically stopped him and grabbed him. Do they have reasonable suspicion that a crime has taken place? (trespassing argument is weak, he was obviously a student and on his way out) .. I really don't know how many times I can point this out. |
