I am also a writer for profit, specializing in essays and other graded assignments for college students. [/ QUOTE ] What the? You get paid to help college students cheat? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Can you recommend any basic books on Monte Carlo simulations? I've recently become interested in the topic. [/ QUOTE ] I don't know of any. Are you interested in writing them or using them? [/ QUOTE ] Both. [ QUOTE ] Favorite books: Foundation series [/ QUOTE ] I have fond memories of reading that series in my youth. Coincidentally, I just bought the whole series for my 12 year old nephew for Christmas. Hopefully, he'll find the time to tear himself away from his computer games and discover the joy of reading those books. |

If I had to make a decision about it right now, I'd probably do a Ph.D. in chemistry. I think that being a research chemist would be interesting work. I've thought about becoming an actuary, but I do find the insurance industry somewhat distasteful. I occasionally think about law school, but I've had some sh*t jobs where I've sat alongside people who had their J.D.s, and lawyers are even scummier than insurance types. I've also thought about getting my doctorate in music, but I have no interest in teaching; I just enjoy studying music. Or I could get a master's in engineering or an M.B.A. or probably other things I'm not thinking of at the moment. Basically, I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Good thing that isn't going to happen any time soon.

I'd suggest Monte Carlo Statistical Methods by Casella and Berger.

I don't post here very often at all (but read a good bit), but this is a good group so i'll share for the hell of it.
How old are you? I'll be 26 this month. Where do you live? Moved to Las Vegas 2 months ago, from Philadelphia. Are you married? Girlfriend/Boyfriend? Children? no, no, no. Occupation besides poker? Software Developer for a medium sized internet travel company. If studying (or if graduated), what and where? Comp Sci degree from Susquehanna U (central PA) in 2002. Favorite movie? Music? I play acoustic guitar a bit and really like 90's rock, classic rock and jam bands. Best poker acomplishment? How long been playing? Been playing 5 years, started at 1-3 stud at the Trop in AC, now I mostly play 30-60 holdem at the bellagio and just about anything 20-40 and under online. No real accomplishments, but my biggest live win was $4,100 in 3 hours playing 40-80 holdem at the Taj. |

Overall, are you glad you moved out to Vegas? What's living out there like? Play live daily? Jeff [/ QUOTE ] Definately glad I moved to Vegas, but mostly because my social life is alot more full even though I only have made a few friends. My job is also alot better and extremely laid back. Living out here is good, I like it much better than the East Coast so far, there is so much to do. As far as poker, I went on a 200BB downswing online right before I came out, and then lost about 8k in live games in Nov and Dec once I got out here. To rebuild (bankroll and sanity) I moved way down online and play less hands, and I cut back on my live play quite a bit too (only 4 times in 2006 so far). I am going to gradually start playing more live, but I am enjoying the social scene alot and spending enough time on work that I don't think it will ever progress to playing more than 2-3 times a week. I have also realized that I am not a good enough player to make a ton of money in the poker to make it worth while giving up other more fun things in life. It's kind of wierd how things turned out because I moved here for much different reasons. |
