How do you handle the "cougher/throat clearer" or "coin jingler"?

lucky for me i learned playing agianst greenskeepers while the lawnmowers were running. im impervious, but even if i wasnt i would never let them see me notice, i would retaliate in kind however.

This is an interesting thread to me for many reasons. I have no problem with general noise. It's certain noises that break silences or are an extreme departure from the current noise state. I had a guy undo his glove in the middle of my backswing. I nearly fell over on the shot, but worse, I tilted.

With most of it, I think a key is never let it give yourself an excuse for a poorly played shot. On the other hand, sometimes extraneous matters make a difference. I'm a lifetime mark. A bit of tension sometimes develops in my putting stroke. It's not necessarily money, but it can be.

I'm trying to be a better short game player as you describe yourself. If I short side myself and there is some grass below the ball I don't have a problem with my 60*.

The problem is short siding myself on hard pan dirt or no grass. I have no confidence and if I just pitch it I'm left with a long ass putt. Do you have less bounce on your lob to make it more versatile and what disadvantages am I taking with less bounce.

Should I take out my 2 iron and play with 2 different lob wedges? Also I am good friends with someone and everytime he marks his ball and putts it back he's a good 1.5 inch closer to the cup. How do I bring this up without basically insinuating that my friend is an angle shooter.

anyone can answer, what is sandbagging?

Playing off a higher handicap than you actually are. Which is why playing for other than nominal stakes you need to take what anybody says is their handicap with many grains of salt.

I've never understod how people can play for money with handicaps. Imagine playing poker with someone but he says "trust me, I really suck, let me have three hole cards and it'll be even"; wtf, no.

well, i look at it as saying hey lets play 25-50 NL and ill give u 5 bucks a hand to sit. holla

Neither here nor there, and I'd love to here what limon has to say-- but I think "hardpan skills" are learned before the age of 18 by playing on lousy munis. I'm a wizard off the hardpan. Put it this way: it is a very consistent lie, so you ought be able to develop a consistent shot (even if that doesn't turn out to be a certain up and down, or whatever).

If I were you I'd take out your 2 iron and use 3 different wedges excluding your pitching wedge. One wedge should be a lob wedge (60), the other should be a sandwedge (56-55) and the final should be a gap wedge (51-52). Depending on the hard pan and the amount of green you have to work with a gap wedge can be very helpful for those type of shots.

It sucks that your friend has to angle shoot, but 1.5 inches isn't enough to make any sort of difference. If you are playing for $$$$ calling him out could [censored] up his mental game. He may think it helps him (when it really doesn't) and if he can't do it anymore he might struggle. putting is all mental.

P.S. I'm a scratch / tournament golfer.

I didn't see this the first time. I'd love to hear limon's take on this, this is exactly what I was getting at. I think it was Bob Toski who when he marked his ball was discovered to flip his quarter forward all in the same motion.

I've never seen someone mark in front and replace in front when I cared/for money-- I'd simply call them out WHEN THEY MARK, directly and not discreetly. If it is a matter of replacing not where they marked you immediately say: "heck, mark it again and you'll be in the hole." Don't be ginger around that.

edit: oops. I should add. If you are a hustler, and it doesn't hurt the balance of your edge-- than nothing is an option.

I've never been scratch or close, but I question you on the hardpan. To me, the tough question is knowing whether it is truly hardpan. If you put my ball on true hardpan or a piece of plywood, I'm okay. It is when I'm thinking that I'm on hardpan and the ground gives and I should have tried something like a blast is where there is a disaster. And anyway, on a shortsided tightlie you want to give yourself a chance, usually, you can't expect a routine up and down.

What's your general image? A rich guy who can afford to drop $$ on a lark? Lots of bling?

How did you manage your image when you were younger?

What did you try to get them to think about you, outside of the golf game itself?
