[ QUOTE ] Also, some people strongly prefer Bushmill's or Jamison for reasons other than taste or cost, ordering the wrong one can get you real funny looks/drink spit in, in the wrong Irish bar/part of town. [/ QUOTE ] There's been no history of sectarian violence in my kitchen. The tasters had no idea what they were drinking much less the religious implications of their choice. [/ QUOTE ] Who was talking about your kitchen? WTF? I don't think anyone really cares about it, are you opening a bar there? |

Two quick mentions I haven't seen:
Auchentoshen 10 yr old single malt-- This is my favorite lowland scotch, and I recommend anyone who has ever enjoyed a lowland malt give this a try if you have the chance. Buffalo Trace--I tried a shot of this at a bar in Louisville once upon a time and loved the hell out of it. I have a bottle I've made last over a year because I can't find anywhere to buy it out here. Really the best non-scotch whiskey I've ever had. |

b,
I generally drink single malts and premium bourbons and premium blends neat, often w/ a couple drops of water. Stuff like Black Label and Maker's I generally drink on the rocks. |

ElD,
Headed with some friends to this bar with some friends tonight and this was just the thread I needed to steer me in the right direction. Thanks. I'm not a total scotch novice, as I've bought (and happily consumed) bottles of Balvenie 12yr Doublewood, 15yr Single Barrel, 18yr Glenlivet, and 12yr Macallan before, admittedly some "intro" malts, but solid nonetheless. Also, I'm looking forward into branching out beyond the Speyside malts. I'll try to remember to come by and post my impressions, not sure how long I'll have tonight, otherwise I'd stay and try every damn one if they would let me. -dt |

d,
For the first couple of years I drank Scotch, that's pretty much exactly what I stuck to, then slowly started branching out into other flavors. |

I’ll also maybe write up a primer on the different types of whiskies by region, bottlings (regular v. finished v. cask strength), blends v. single malts v. single casks, distillery bottlings v independent bottlers, etc. [/ QUOTE ] I just found this article on Epicurious. Could you elaborate on the regional differences and blends vs. single malts? |

Ooooh.. Whisky. I think I've tried most of the well-known Scottish distilleries [1], if not their full range. I'll just post a few of my favourites and a wee bit of reasoning.
Lagavulin 16 - I'll pick this as my favourite Islay whisky, though Laphroaig and Ardbeg makes killer whisky too. A nice amber colour and a smell that easily puts you in a nostalgic mood if you've ever had some good times around a campfire. The taste is well-rounded, though obviously heavily coloured by peat and smoke. Long, complex aftertaste. Talisker 10 - Could have been an Islay whisky, but is technically not (don't ask). Peaty, smokey and spiced. Much more polished and rounded than typical Islay whiskys, while still retaining the "smokey edge". Glenlivet 12-18 - Perhaps my favourite Speyside whisky. Very well rounded. Definite hints of fruit / honey. Smooth sailing. Excellent choice for first time single malt drinkers. Oban 14 - A highland-whisky that could just as well have been an islay whisky. Aggressive in the smoke and peat department. Delicious stuff. [1] What, they're making whisky outside of Scotland? |
