Default $50 +2.50 HU sit-n-go experiment- 205 games played.......

Preface: Since the games I was doing well in for the last 5 years seem to be drying up or getting tougher, I decided to give HU sng's a shot to see if I could hammer out a living. Shorthanded and heads up play has always been my strongsuit, so I thought I might be able to do ok. I decided to start at $50 games in the beginning and keep accurate records to see if I should go up in stakes, down in stakes, stay at the same stakes, or quit altogether.

I've played 205 games and figured this was as good a time as any to step back and see what's going on. I also thought I'd share this info with you guys because there doesn't seem to be a wealth of hard data here. I set a spreadsheet up so that when each game was over, I had to record whether I won or lost, and how long the game took. Excel did the rest. Here's what I kept track of:

Game type: $50 + 2.50 heads up sit-n-go
Games played: 205
Games won: 123
Games lost: 82
Win %: 60%
Total time: 2293 min. (38.22 hours)
Avg time/game: 11 min.
Avg profit/game: $7.50
Avg profit/hour: $40.23
Total profit: $1537.50

From what I've seen here, this seems to be a decent win rate, but I realize the sample size isn't quite big enough to make any solid conclusions. I think I'm going to get to a sample size of about 500 before I decide whether to move up or not. If I keep it around 58-60%, I probably will see if I can carry that over to $100 sng's. I have a list of things that have helped me mentally in this venture that I will share, as well as some tips that have helped me win some games. Give me a little while and I'll post it in this thread.

Any comments?

Thanks for the welcome jay.

As far as things that have helped me in my experiement, hopefully these will help some of you:

- You know you are going to lose 4 out of every 10 games, so go into each game knowing there's a good chance you will lose, regardless of how bad the opponent is. Don't get all pissed off and throw stuff when you get outdrawn or they make a bad call and catch (I know, easier said than done).

- Don't overcall preflop with hands like K6 and Q7 from the big blind. Too many times you flop top pair and its hard to get away from. You're looking to flop big hands or big draws and it's hard to make them with these cards. When you do hit these hands, you usually either don't get many chips or are outkicked and lose chips.

- Don't go all in with crap no matter how low your stack is. I've come back several times by waiting a few extra hands for something decent, then doubling up a few times. Too many people lose a big hand and say "screw it" after that.

- Sometimes you will get completely outplayed. Deal with it- there are people better than you at this. Try not to play them.

- Many people play these very formulaic. Don't do the same thing. Figure out their pattern and adjust. e.g.- if they call too much, stop bluffing. if they raise preflop every hand and keep firing, wait for premium hands. Their heads are programmed and most people have trouble changing styles.

- Lay down top pair without a great kicker to a check raise often, unless your opponent CR's a lot and is very tricky, or you have a strong read. All it takes is one hand to put you in a hole and it's better to give up when there's an 80% chance you're beat.

- A value bet on the end is almost always preferrable to going all in and trying to end it. 1/3 or 1/2 the pot is much better than the nothing you get when your opponent folds.

- Most players will not risk all of their chips on a bluff on the river. Remember this when you have top pair and a bad kicker or 2nd pair with a good kicker.

- When you get into a 3/1 hole, be ready to push preflop with any ace and any pair. Smooth call your big pairs. If you get outdrawn so be it. You need to double up.

That's all I can think of for now. Naturally, a lot of this stuff crosses over to other poker games. Any of you guys have any advice you could pass along to those in need?

Lee

One thing that sticks out hugely, and it's really one of those things that, long run, will help you far more than adjustments in play: Choosing your opponents. I highly recommend subscribing to Sharkscope and seeing who the regulars are and avoiding them -- try to make a list of fish that you pursue and keep at them. For me, it's the calling stations that fill my bankroll up just delightfully, whereas the grinders are a pain in my side, especially since I consider myself a grinder as well.

Otherwise, love the advice, Lee. Keep it coming!

Thanks for the input everybody. If you disagree with something I said, I'd love to hear why. I didn't come on here to preahc- just to share my experiences and gain more knowledge.

One thing I forgot to mention was that a decent amount of HU sng'ers will play aggressively in the beginning and tighten up as the blinds go up. SOmetimes it happens slowly, and sometimes it happens like a switch flipping. Try to recognize when it's happening and play accordingly.

As for the tracker software, I've been doing these on a couple sites that are not primary places to play this type of game. There are usually no more than 2 or 3 running at the same time, and sometimes I have to wait up to 15 minutes to get an opponent. Therefore it's not too hard to keep track of who's who. If I was a full-time poker player this might be frustrating, but for now it fits well within my work schedule.

What site are you playing on Ibiar and are these games Turbo's? I find an average of 11 min. per game in non-turbo games very quick.

That would be the beginning of the 2nd level (15-30)average on Stars, where the starting stack of 1500 is still 50 big blinds. Some games take 30-40 minutes, making it near impossible to get to an average of 11 minutes per encounter on PS. Anyway, nice run sofar. Goldmund
