Default cheap place to stay in vegas?

I'm currently studying in Austria, where i've gotten into playing online (currently NL25). I'm coming home to caliornia for Xmas and want to make a trip to Vegas to try my hand at live cash games for a few days.
but i'm still a semi-broke student, and i'd rather spend my money at the tables than on an over priced hotel room with a miniature Eifell tower in it. so... anyone know of a cheap place to stay near the strip?
thanks! (and sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, but i couldn't figure out where would be...)

I love that website.

Also, fyi, there's a Motel 6 on Tropicana near the MGM that usually has relatively cheap rates. There's also one across the freeway on paradise that's cheap too. As far as slightly more respectable places go, you might want to check out Circus Circus, Sahara, the Ghettoshpere (both true and a great story), and almost anywhere DT.

Don't listen to anyone that tells you to stay downtown; the amount that you'll pay in cab fares plus the opportunity cost of the inconvenience make several strip hotels a better option. You should stay at the Imperial Palace. Perfect location and absurdly cheap.

If you're going before Christmas, book the Winter Gold Special: http://www.imperialpalace.com/stay.p...;contentid=420

After Christmas, book the Casino Gold Special: http://www.imperialpalace.com/stay.p...;contentid=284

And definitely don't hit Vegas in the few days surrounding New Year's, because that will drive your room cost way up regardless of where you stay.

I suggest the Bellagio suite and invite me on a more serious note i'd say any motel around there should be good.
