pryor,

My grandma and her side of the family were born and raised in Bar Harbor, ME and, other than my grandmoms, now reside in Bangor. I have been to both places and have to say the only distinguishing thing about Bangor was that Stephen King lived there and Bar Harbor was just a [censored] tourist place that was once a great place to visit. So, my question is: is there anything to do other than hunt and be colder than meant to be in Waldoboro? What is this place like?

P.S. I just got around to picking up The Red House Painters (took forever I know), I have the album with the carnivel on the front (my favorite) and "Songs For a Blue Guitar." I just wanted to thank you for the rec, they are great, really great but when I was listening to them they sounded very familiar--ahhh I had been listening to the lead singer's new band Sun Kill Moon lately and didn't know anything about the connection. Very nice. So this is part counter recommendation (Sun Kill Moon).

I was holding off reading this thread because from the title I thought it would be awful. BUT, I am really enjoying reading this! Good Job!

It's all about power, and nine times out of ten, the write ain't got none. If you sell a script, the Producer can use it as toilet paper. It's his to do with what he wants. (Now, some writers, through success, do gather power and varrying degress of "rewrite protection," but there's hard and fast rules on such a thing. It's all negotiable.)

[/ QUOTE ]

So you sell the script, and therefore the rights to the script, correct?

Now, for example, say you wrote "D.A.R.Y.L.," and they ended up making "The Terminator" out of it. Can you just re-sell the same script to someone else who may want to make -that- movie? How much would you have to change, if anything at all.

It just seems like them making a completely different movie should "free" the script once more to potentially be made, but I don't know.

Could -they- re-sell the script to the original after they make the very different movie?

Solo & Bodhi,

since you guys essentially asked the same question (more or less), here's some books that are worth a damn

most of the stuff i end up reading is collections of reviews from the likes of Ebert, Pauline Kael, et al.

"Agee on film" is quite good, and you can't go wrong with Truffaut's "Hitchcock"

i haven't read enough of them to have an opinion yet, but i'm currently chipping away at Ralph Stevenson's "The Cinema as Art" and Annette Insdorf's "Francois Truffaut"

actually, there's a good deal of work by Insdorf that's worth a damn.

one method is dig around used bookstores for stuff that looks interesting, where you can sometimes find books that deal with directors who aren't as "hip" as they used to be.

also, textbooks, if you can find them, are pretty helpfull.

i've only scratched the surface. if anyone else has suggestions, fire away...

Let's look at Waldoboro, shall we?

Waldoboro--home of the 5 masted schooner--is a tiny coastal Maine town of about 5,000 people. US Route One runs directly through the middle, as does the Medomak River.

there are, that i know of, 2 noteworthy people to come out of Waldoboro: Clyde Sukeforth, the scout that signed Jackie Robinson, and Josh Nash, Maine's Mr. Basketball in 1995.

The local High School, Medomak Valley High School, does reasonably well in several different sports, but the important one is basketball. the boys won 4 straight eastern Maine titles (i think this is right) in the 70's and early 80's. The town's private school, Coastal Christian High School (which i attended), has won 3 state titles in basketball.

when most people think of Waldoboro, they think of Moody's Diner, a diner of some fame. Tim Sample, a Maine humorist, has mentioned it in a lot of his stuff, and it used to be the only place on Route 1 that was open all night, so truckers and the like would often stop there. it looks like this:

they now have a gift shop, where they sell a massive amount of official Moody's gear, including this line, designed by my brother:

this winter, he'll be marrying into the Moody clan, so soon i'll be related to them all.

but there really isn't anything to "do" in Waldoboro. Sure, there outdoors stuff, like swimming and hiking and whatnot, and the town recently added a nice wine store and a quasi-classy restaurant, but that's about it. basically, you have to create your own entertainment, which is why people often go to nearby Rockland or Camden, where there's a lot more going on. and when i say there's nothing to do, i mean it. the places that are open past 8pm most nights are: Moody's, the gas stations, the Movie Pizza Shoppe (which makes some great pizza, btw), and the Chineese restaurant. That's it.

but, it's a quiet, friendly, working class town. you could do a lot worse.

"Story" by Robert McKee is well worth reading for insights into moviemaking. Even if you don't agree with his methods in creating a screenplay, the guy has great respect and insight for everyone in the moviemaking profession, as well as a better understanding of what motivates human beings than most psychologists. (His writing on the nature of evil still sets the standard for me, more than any philospher can hope to obtain, in much clearer language.) I also appreciated actors much more after he explained how they take what is written on the page and flesh it out into real characters. (At least the good ones do.)

Robert Osborne (the TCM host) has written extensively about film and really knows his stuff. I think he's the world's leading expert on the Academy Awards and the background info he has on important films is amazing.

You can read every review ever written by Roger Ebert at his site rogerebert.com, though I think it may be the slowest site in the history of the web. I always respect his reviews, although after reading him awhile, you'll realize he does have his biases and sometimes really misses the mark. But even when he misses, it's interesting to see why.

Personally, I've never been able to get into Kael. Every time I try to, I give up with the thought that I shouldn't have to work this hard to understand a mere movie review. Half the time I have no idea if she likes the movie or not, and I start to think the review is more about her than the movie. But some people love her, so it's always worth a shot.
