I don't like Nxd5 because of e4 coming with tempo. Then, say, ... Nf6, Qxd8 Kxd8, Bg5 Be7 (else our pawn structure will be ruined), Nc3 and now O-O-O+ will come with tempo next move and our development is messed up, king in the centre and our b8 knight has no good central square.

Not recapturing the pawn is unthinkable, so cxd5 it is.

While I don't usually suggest moves without alternatives, there is little to suggest here outside of cxd5. When we played ...d5, the whole idea was to take on the isolated d-pawn and play accordingly.

For upcoming thinking, the things to remember about having an isolated d-pawn are a couple of keys:

1) If we can advance it favorably (ie, without losing material) at some point, we should do so

2) Curtains will attempt to place a piece on the d4 square (for him, preferably a knight) to stop us from advancing it

3) With an isolated d-pawn for black, your important piece is your dark squared bishop

4) Don't lose the pawn

Someday we should get around to like developing a piece maybe.

David-

Thanks for the input on handling our lonely d pawn. This game has been very instructional for me so far.

I guess our dark square bishop is important since it can hit the dark d4 square, possibly eliminating a piece acting as a blockade to our pawn.

I suppose I should reread Nimzo's book as it has a section that deals with this topic.

We did discuss bringing our king to the center earlier in the game.

Well, we can likely play Nc6 with tempo next.
