My brother told me that the Libertarian party believes the next best thing to them being in power is to have split power in the government. In other words, we need the Republicans to control the House, and the Democrats control the Senate (or vise versa). I cannot confirm that the Libertarian party actually said this, but it makes sence. With split control, we'll have more gridlock. With more gridlock, hopefully stupid bills like this would have never been passed.

So you want to fund a government that accomplishes nothing?

[/ QUOTE ]

It would be better than one whos net effect is extreme harm.

but had to also shake my head at how they twisted into just another plea for contributions from the faithful, rather than attempting to stir up, shall we say, non-financial activism. "The party of principle" is just as opportunist as the other parties.

[/ QUOTE ]

And just how exactly do you expect Libertarian candidates to get elected without any funding? It's not the LPs fault that getting elected anywhere requires a ton of money.

16. Amending the Constitution is a very serious thing and should not be advocated lightly or for mere matters of policy. Banning gay marriage or flag burning via amendment is not only wrong, but the attempt cheapens the Constitution itself. eye of the beholder. I guarantee you the founding fathers would not have condoned either gay marriage or flag burning. Amending the Constitution to clarify it doesnt cheapen it

[/ QUOTE ]

FYI, the founding fathers did condone flag burning; at least enough to do it themselves in protest of the British government.

When a Libertarian candidate depletes all of his fiances to lend $1.2 million dollars to his campaign just so he can debate and attract at least a little media attention, there is a problem (http://hammeroftruth.com/2006/10/04/...edia/#comments).

The Libertarian Party is blocked by the media, not allowed in debates, forced to overcome very unfair ballot access and election rules, lack of money to get their voice out, no venue to defend their positions that are often portrayed as "extreme," arrested for protesting inclusion in debates, etc. We HAVE to ask for money, because at this point money sadly buys power in government. We would love to change that fact, but first we need to get elected.

If you want us to be your definition of "principled" and just be a debate club, we can do that. But if we have any hopes of changing government for the better, money and exposure is the only way we can do it.

The Libertarian philosophy is simple: live and let live. Each person should have the right to do as he pleases so long as he harms no one and doesn't limit others' freedom to do as they please; however, each person must also be responsible for the consequences of his own actions.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's not quite this simple, actually. Libertarians don't believe in most zoning/property laws, so live and let live, but don't mind the big chemical plant that just bought the lot next to you.

And buyer beware, there aren't any building codes, so the previous owner of your house didn't put any re-bar in the foundation. Hey, who's the government to tell him how to build his house! Too bad it's sinking now, guess that's your problem.

Oh, did your kid die from a bad batch of flu vaccine? Sorry about that, but the libertarians got rid of the FDA, too much regulation. The good news is, that now that your kid is dead, not as many people will buy drugs from that pharmaceutical company. The marketplace will fix it all!

I'm no fan of Republicans or Democrats, especially Republicans, but the Libertarians are far to extreme on way too many issues.

[/ QUOTE ]

Everything you said is completely false and mischaracterizing about libertarians. Please come into the politics forum and learn something about capitalism.

What we need is a poker celebrity to run for President or Vice-President as a Libertarian in 2008 on a platform of repealing this stupid law.
