Colorado has a few cities that allow poker, blackjack, and slots. Unfortunately the maximum bet at a table game is $5 which means the round trip drive to Blackhawk from Denver eats up so much profit that it's really only worth going for the occasional diversion.
Any other CO residents have any ideas on how we can start working to raise the betting limits? I would be happy to make the drive more regularly if I could play $10/$20 or $20/$40 live instead of $2-$5 spread limit. Any suggestions appreciated, as I am a complete political n00b. |

According to Gov Owens, no way. The right-wing xtian fascists won't stand for it. And he's one.
Bill Ritter would rather get tough on crime by plea bargaining for 95% conviction rates. Don't make waves, just look good is his motto. Bob Beauprez is another in the Owens camp. So Bingohawk and the others will stay at $5 max. The bingo church ladies won't stand for more. |

There are two ways to change the law to allow gambling in CO:
1. Statutory change, passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. I don't see any political groundswell which would cause this. 2. Constitutional change voted by the people, such as happened with Cripple Creek, Blackhawk, and Central City, which mandates expanded gambling or higher limits. As for this, if a change was to expand gambling beyond its current three cities, they would fight to oppose it, as they have successfully fought video poker at racetracks, and a proposed expansion of gambling to Trinidad. Here's a link to an excellent article by then-attorney general Gale Norton outlining the legality of gambing in CO. CO Attorney General Web Site Kind of interesting what she says about poker being a game of chance. Personally, I don't mind the stakes so much (except that they haven't kept pace with inflation in the past 13 years). But living in Colorado Springs, it is a pain to make the hour long drive on winding mountain roads to Cripple Creek. Cheers, Carl. |

Basically, the politicians are against the idea, as are the smaller casinos. It would be up to the larger casinos to push the issue and try to get it on a ballot. |

I just moved to this state without realizing this absurdity. By capping the betting limits, the only people that gamble are the people that should absolutely not be gambling! Have you been to Blackhawk? It's like whitetrash festival, and everyone is losing their $10/hour paychecks!
Anyways, as to changing a law like this, it's next to impossible. I'd love nothing more than to see some 10/20 games sprouting up, but states love old laws, and republicans hate drastic change. And, I hate to say it, but let's change this states poor schools before anything else.... |

This has been a pet issue for Mike Rosen (850 KOA talk show host), who is an avid player at the Denver Press Club. Carl has stated the methods above. There is also the possibility that an indian casino gets approved by the airport. If you recall, that proposal was shot down by Owens.
In any event, there is a lack of home games in Denver. I would like to host some more games, so PM me if you are interested. |

I got a better idea, follow North Dakotas lead and get online gaming allowed. Hell there trying to pass a bill to allow pot right now, gambling online might have a chance. Enough signatures and you can get near anything you want on a ballot.

Rumor has it, some of the casinos will be funding
a voter initiative to raise the limits and/or extend the hours of operation. Right now they are just in the study phase. I think they are shooting for a 2008 ballot. |

It would also be nice if they didn't close at 2AM too!
A casino manager told me one time that one reason for the five dollar cap on betting is that they were scared of orginized crime coming in and building casinos. That sounds about as stupid now as it did then!! They were also worried that all of the "White Trash" would blow all of their wellfare checks on gambling! |
