My father was raised orthodox Jewish, but observes no religion. My mother was raised Catholic, but converted so that they could be married by a rabbi so that my dad's parents would be happy. I have never been to temple, nor did I have a bar-mitzvah. In practice, I'm basically a nihilist. Am I Jewish?

If yes, then no, I did not fast. If I'm not indeed Jewish, ignore this reply. But I wish someone could clear up the issue for me, because when people ask me if I'm Jewish I need an easier answer.

If your mother converted to judaism then you are jewish (anyone with a jewish mother is jewish). Now depending on who you ask her conversion may or may not be valid. If she converted orthodox most won't contest it.

And I fasted for sha. No shul though.

According to some Jews having a Jewish mother is a prerequisite for being Jewish, but it does not automatically mean that someone is Jewish. If somebody has a Jewish mother but is an atheist, they are not Jewish.

I'd rather not fast and be a good person year round, than fast and go back to being a prick the next day.

I'm reform BTW.

Fasting has nothing to do with how you act towards other people. Its to attone for sins against G-d.

And tradition, dude, tradition.

I never fast. My metabolism is so high that I freak out if I haven't eaten in six hours. If I try 24 I go ballistic.

[/ QUOTE ]

i just realized that this use to happen to me, my metabolism is ridiculously high (im 19, 5'11 and about 160) and when i use to not eat, i would almost feel 'high' extremely light headed and the only thing that would make me feel better is to eat whatever the hell i could find, and fast.
